I had a big re-set at 27, and have averaged one every seven years. I'd keep the few good bits that I'd learned, and try the most promising looking new direction. Sometimes, lessons from one field were tremendously valuable in an unrelated one. With broad experience, it got easier to adapt to new sit...

My path was ifteen years of going to self-help groups and various therapies that never seemed to fit, and then finding a description of AS when I was trying to figure out my mother. Suddenly, both our lives made sense.

My special interest seems to be self-hiding. People can read articles about what I've done, and not really learn anything. I suspect that they can't believe that such important things can be as simple as the way I explain them.

If it is a small matter, I'll get distracted and move on soon enough. If it is a big deal, and I've done a good job gathering data and making pro vs con lists, etc, and things are still quite even, I flip a coin. However, I don't necessarily do as the call says. Half the time, as soon as I see the r...

If there are house rules like "no shoes" I'll follow them even without the residents around - unless it is dirty where I have to work. Doing everything on one trip is a plus. I once re-built a deluxe stove burner switch with parts from two cheap ones we normally stocked. Recently, someone ...

When I get an inexperienced apprentice, the first thing I tell them to do is to break some of the stuff in my scrap pile. As you bend a piece of metal, the force needed keeps rising, and then suddenly stays the same. It is important to be able to sense that, because the distance you keep bending is ...

Doing extra-odd jobs and repairs, I was usually working alone, and for people who couldn't find anyone else for the job. I could often apply a bit of extra know-how from other trades and save them a lot of money, so I didn't get many complaints, except when I couldn't finish on time.

If I try to get my point across, I struggle. My odds of success are well under 1%. If I try to tell medical people that I have a pre-existing condition that needs to be taken into account, they ignore it and wind up doing more harm than good.

For me, the struggle would have been boredom, but I took the "extra-odd jobs" that would have been slow and risky to hire others for. Those were my most reliable "day jobs" while I tried to make progress in my main vocation. If you are suitable for the trades, you have probably a...

One thing that astonishes me is all the moaning about the price of a one-bedroom apartment. I was quite content with one room and a shared kitchen and/or bathroom. One time, I rented a whole house and sublet the upstairs, living almost free in the basement. Another friend with a cheap travel trailer...

LED IS fluorescent, just energized differently. You just have to shop for the right mix of phosphors. Ott lights are the best for simulating daylight. There are LEDs that produce pure red, green, and blue, with a very narrow spectrum, and these can be combined to approximate white for a computer scr...

If you want to save on energy, it helps to know where to focus, and what's trivial. Things that can run for a long time on a small battery, such as radios, draw very little power. Things that quietly make heat are usually the biggest draws. LED lights are about a hundred times more efficient than ca...

I read my meter every day, and by being aware of what I did on the days of higher consumption, I've reduced it about 20%. Unfortunately, the demand for economical housing far exceeds the supply, but people do keep finding niches.

When I bought a writer's program, Scrivener, I was surprised that most of the other customers were writing scripts, considering the ratio of published books to produced shows. The people with movie grade money are very cautious, unimaginative people who want something very much like what worked last...

I can't remember the last time I saw moving cartoons, but I'm fascinated with stills, particularly the body language. I'm also baffled at how some very unrealistic faces look fine and expressive, but similarly unrealistic amateur drawings just look bad. I always start drawing a head with the outline...

I used to resent the dishonesty sometimes needed to be polite, but eventually realized that I might be dealing with people having a really hard day, and manners were like traffic regulations to avoid accidents. However, there is a much larger field of unwritten rules that I'm trying to codify. I spe...
