With all the recent backlash with W8, I can't help but feel that Windows 7 will be the new XP and will be popular for a long time. What do you think?

Yeah I kind of figured windows 8 would be a bad idea, I mean they finally got it right with windows 7 so chances are the next two or three versions are going to be all glitchy. I hated windows vista enough and from what I hear windows 8 isn't much of an improvement to that.

I believe it will be. Windows 7 is the best yet, but they followed it up with something truly crappy and unnecessary, much like they followed XP with Vista.

I've been using W8 for about 8 months. Before that I had W7 for over 2 years. W8 is an improvement especially in the plethora of apps you don't have to install. You really notice the stability of your system because of the built in IE9 and the anti-virus/anti-malware software working in the background.

^^^ Because downloading IE9 and Microsoft Security Essentials from the built-in Win7 updates is so difficult? :(

Win8 has only one benefit - more efficient use of more than 4 cores if you have a VERY high end processor. Everything else is just too radical a change and a big step down in finding/running apps.

Win7 is going to be preferred for a long time - even just over the lost Start button. (Yes, I know you can buy one for $5. How stupid!)

I loathe how Win8 is cheap because it's loaded with ADVERTISING!

Windows is crap. It really doesn't matter which one you have.

^This. And Bill Gates is ruthless, so there's no alternatives. Apple gave up on the Mac a long time ago, they now make iJunk. Linux? If you like having a grand total of five programs to choose from, and word processing that won't resolve with anything else, including Word, because (again) BG is a take-no-prisoners type of guy. If he wasn't, he wouldn't be richer than God. Sucks for little people though. But life sucks for us anyway. The world is made for the super rich, and they literally want to kill the rest of us off so they can have the planet to themselves.

I sort of gave up on PC's as soon as they introduced touch screen, so Windows 8 will never have the pleasure of running on my machine. I don't see any reason to upgrade at the moment anyway. Windows 7 does everything I need even if it doesn't get DirectX 12 when it gets released.

Hi! I've been programming for 26 years. 9 years in DOS, 17 years in Windows. Apart from the most esoteric extension APIs, I basically know (nay, grok!) the entire Windows SDK and .NET framework and how both operate. Almost down to elementary particle level for much of it... (hee hee...) :coffee:

I agree that some Windows versions have been abysmal, but the tables have turned.

Now- can you please show me where Windows 7 is "crap"?

Its unfortunate that I haven't had the opportunity (read: time) to immerse myself into the unix/linux-world, but I'm a strong proponent of its continued success. Though I'm completely against Apple and their ghastly repulsive fascistic personality and imperialistic marketing ways that don't even border on brainwashing, but cross the borders completely and wander well into orthodox religion territory.

Just wanted to make my position clear about it in case you'd want to discuss that... :?

Bill Gates haven't had a say in Microsoft's decision making for years. Are you living in the 90ies? Also, he's far from the richest man in the world anymore. He put all of his money in a charity foundation he and his wife took over from his dad in 1999 (Note: He stepped down as Microsoft's CEO in 2000) to try to erradicate poverty and help people develop self-sustainability in extremely poor countries around the world - which he is regularily reported to be actively pursuing by the way...

Picking on Bill Gates these days is embarrassing. Could you ever imagine Steve Jobs do anything like that?

While he's given a great deal of money to charity, I don't think that it comes close to being anything like he himself has.

As for the main charity, I think his father is in charge of it, but it is not his father's charity.

I suspect that there are some really great tax advantages to putting great deals of money into such charities. From then on it grows pretty much tax free and gives your kids a really great nearly guaranteed employment opportunity for their entire lives while limiting their ability to spend it all on drugs and sex. It's interesting how many charities set up by very wealthy and influential people end up employing their kids at quite high salaries.

I don't entirely agree. Windows XP is still my top favorite OS. Especially when it's stripped of all the unneeded services and drivers.

I'm never ditching XP for anything new at this stage.

ive been using windows 8 for the past few wks and if you dont look at the app menu it is just like windows 7 in desktop mode. Only thing is it updates every time you shut it off and those updates last for an hour or so.

I was going to say something similar - I don't agree with the way the Windows API is "structured" (evolved) from its 1980s roots, I think C# is a poorly conceived language, I think all kinds of things are crap, but Windows 7 is only a "crap" operating system when compared to Nonexistent Operating System X that has a fast file system, is open source, is bug free, supports all the apps Windows does, etc etc. There is no operating system that actually exists that you can conclusively say is absolutely superior to Windows 7. I am not a fanboy.
