FWIW, I prefer SuSE LInux over Ubuntu and may switch my primary workstation back to that.

I never used BSD distros, is it that different than Debian based? I used to listen to Mr. Jude from Jupiter Broadcasting he is a major BSD guy.

One big difference is that you don't have all these graphics programs to configure everything. Nearly everything is configured by editing a file. The only one I can think of on OpenBSD with a graphical interface for configuration something is WindowsMaker.

I started with Ubuntu about ten years ago when a laptop that I had (with windows) crashed. Ubuntu was a little buggy but it worked well enough to get through a few years of school with. Have been using mint since then without any real problems ever.
Since I built a new computer last week (or so), I've got my laptop as backup, or extra, or something. So yesterday I installed Slackware on the laptop, because I figure that, like many other things, in order to really learn something I need to be immersed in it and have no other real options but to sink or swim.
It's ridiculous. I managed to get it installed, then had to reinstall it after I wrecked something. After the reinstall I managed to get it to connect to the internet (!). Then it took me most of an hour to figure out how to shut it off.
So far it's been more fun than frustrating.

BSD is a different Unix based open source operating system that uses a less restrictive license then Linux does. You can try TrueOS if you want to test it on a PC or in a virtual machine.

To be more exact, BSD is not only the first open source version of UNIX, it is directly derived from UNIX. The only thing keeping them from being labeled as UNIX is the costs of UNIX Certification.

running Xubuntu here.

a multi-boot machine means shutting Linux down  . virtual machines and containers help you avoid having to do that.

do you know people that run Windows? they probably have an old computer they can't use any more. god chance it will run Linux. maybe you can get and older PC in exchange for helping them.

This sounded familiar, so I went and looked it up.
Sounds interesting.
Not sure I have the time to delve into it at the moment though.

Humboldt county!

I had to give up on slackware. It's beyond my ability right now. I have been working on learning more since then, though.

It's likely I'll have to wait myself, until I retire... whenever that comes! hahaha
My main computer-related projects nowadays revolve around programming an Arduino Uno as the brain for a submersible ROV... among other things!
.
But I'll keep Slackware in the backfiles for now! :)

Yeah.... Humboldt County... like you!
I range from Arcata to Eureka, on down to Fortuna all week long.

i used to run Slackware since it begin. it gave me the kind of control i loved, the way i loved doing it. i even went to 64-bit with it. i only quit (at version 14.1) because i retired from IT work and want to be more casual with Linux. so, i switched to Ubuntu, then to Xubuntu. i no longer build my own hardware, either.

"LINUX users: Have you ever used LINUX?"

Result should be 100% "Yes" and it is

I started off with Mint but didn't get on with it so now I'm on Debian and quite happy. Still have an old W7 laptop for ripping CDs with CUETools but everything else is Linux.

I've got Mint, MX Linux, Antix, Q4OS and LXLE on various laptops. Only use MX with any regularity.

I miss Linux :(. I really wish it would have taken off, as well as other OSS. A girl dressed as a penguin last Halloween and I shouted excitedly, "OMG IT'S TUX!! !!" I used Ubuntu on different devices, Linux Mint, Kubuntu, and Debian a loooong time ago.

Happy Slackware user here! I tried other distros but kept coming back to Slackware.

It's the only OS on my laptop and desktop. It's rock solid and does everything I need.

I'm on my Fedora XPS 13 with a CalDigit ts3 plus Thunderbolt dock now. It works with this Linux machine as well as two of my work computers; I can leave the ultrabook charging until I need the home 4K for either my home or work workstations now & they all run on the same cable.

I'm also planning to eventually add a second NVMe to my Thinkpad P1 to do some exploring about new chipset features vs. new kernel(s) since it has a Xeon.
