So yeah, seems to be not for me;
- Rolling release
- Feels awkward to use, esp. Portage
- Manual installation is tedious
Tho it's fast and Portage doesn't break, unlike FreeBSD ports

I'm trying out the Matrix (instant messaging platform) client app Fluffychat. For being Open Source, wow is it nice looking. All the modern conveniences are there: emojis, reactions, editing posts, etc. So far no bugs. I expect over the next few weeks, subtle bugs may emerge. But for now, I'm having a good first impression.
I've tried it now on 3 platforms: Linux, iPadOS, and Android. It's rare to get something as nice as this - remember, it's open source - in the Apple ecosystem.

I've got new reading glasses, and there's a noticeable difference, comparing using this forum in a browser tab (Fennec for Android), and Fluffychat. Since Fluffychat is using native "Material You" widgets, the text moves around smoother on this 6-year old phone. Just that smoothness itself, the reduced eye strain - that alone is a great feature. I've got the eyesight of a middle-aged man now.

I had a similar experience where my kids finally convinced me to invest some time into going to the local optometrist and buy a new pair. It was a true "why did I wait this long"- moment

That deserves a new thread right there: what is your Autistic "why did I wait that long" epiphany?

Ill talk about this here in case anyone would be interested in a new smart phone with a physical keypad~
I got an email today from Kickstarter with highlighted projects. I occasionally contribute to music artists on there by preordering CDs so I'm on Kickstarter's general email list. Anyways one project I saw in the email seemed very interesting to me~
"Titan 2 - The Latest 5G QWERTY Physical Keyboard Smartphone"
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/je ... 2025-07-08
It's an android phone that's supposed to ship in October. There's about 15 days left. The retail cost might be about $400 US but on Kickstarter the currency conversion looks to be around $270 ish before taxes & shipping & possible currency conversion fees from my bank or credit-card. If I get it I would add the leather case to carry it on my waist that cost about $30 so my total cost would be about $300 before taxes & shipping ect.
I tried posting a YouTube review that's on the Kickstarter page here but when I post I get a YouTube error message that the vid is unavailable BS.
I've only had three smartphones so far in my life. My first was a Droid 2, then I had a Droid 4 till a couple years ago after it broke when I dropped it. Lots of apps quite working long before that point but I kept the phone that long because I really liked having a physical keypad due to problems with fine motor-skills. The phone I got after my Droid 4 broke was the LG v40 Thin Q. My girlfriend got one as well. I make lots of typing mistakes & I also sometimes accidentally tap Enter while I'm in the middle of typing which causes google to try preforming searches or try going to sites sometimes before I even type one full word
About a year ago I looked into android phones with physical keypads & the only really current phones that I found were the Titan phones & they had three different ones. I've considered buying one but I didn't have much money(still don't) & there were things I majorly disliked about the designs~
~The Slim had a vertical screen with small physical buttons underneath.
~The Pocket had a square screen but did not seem much wider than the slim was so the phone & buttons seemed even smaller.
~The Ultimate Rugged phone looked a bit bigger but that was partly because there was lots of rubber looking stuff around the edges I guess to make the phone more durable but I would have wanted to sacrifice siding protection for a bigger screen & buttons or just have a much bigger phone overall to have a bigger screen & buttons. Plus the phone seemed to be about as outdated as my v40.
The Titan 2 seems a lot more advanced than my v40. v40 has android 10 & is compatible with 4G but not 5G. Whereas the Titan 2 comes with android 15 with support being promised at least till android 17 & it's also 5G compatible. The Titan 2 comes with lots of features I know I would not want to use but I think it has less third party bloatware. I tried rooting my v40 literally about a dozen times without success due to stupid security protection update because I wanted to uninstall it's bloatware. At least I was allowed permission to disable some of it.
My main issues I've noticed looking at the Titan 2~
~The screen is square & I would prefer a horizontal screen that was the same height but longer. However I never use my v40 for gaming anyway & I only watch vids sometimes. Plus lots of sites require me to hold it vertically in portrait mode instead to see & access menus & so some banners don't take up half my screen. At least with the Titan 2 it looks like my screen size would be bigger than typing on my v40 holding it vertically.
~It has sim card slots so you can have separate numbers for home & work but it does not have any SD card slots. However the hardrive space is over 500 gigs which is very nice but I'd have to plug it in to my computer using the USB cable in order to transfer stuff back & forth instead of using an SD card but I don't do that a whole lot.
~It has no built in headphone jack. I listen to music while riding on the bus a bit always using wired earbuds. The Titan 2 does comes with an adapter to have a headphone jack but using an adapter would be one more thing to carry with my earbuds.
A while back my parents sent me a check so I could buy things on Amazon for them(there's concerned about ID theft & having money stolen so they prefer me to do it) but they also gave an extra $500 for so me & Cass could buy some extra stuff for ourselves. Cass spent a bit buying a printer & scanner but I haven't bought anything for myself yet. Buying this phone would add up to a bit more than the $500 but my parents said that the money was negotiable if we needed/wanted to spend a bit more on fun stuff. My parents are lower middle-class & both retired with a bit of money saved up in various types of accounts so I don't feel too bad negotiating for a bit more $$$. I plan to call my parents tonight anyways so I should do some math after posting this. I'm still kinda on the fence about buying this phone but if I can negotiate more money from my parents it would help sway me. Titan 2s are supposed to ship in October & my birthday is in the middle of November so the phone seems like it could be a nice bDay present for me. A side-note is that the pictures of the designers faces seems like they're hipsters. I def do not consider myself a hipster but I do relate to some stuff about them.

I'd rather forget 'bout that luxury nowadays

But hey, there's a charger!
If I think about it, I've broken no phone so far, and it's a lil' over decade since I have them. Even that Huawei P20 I once had unluck to drive it, which lately I threw violently with premeditation (Reskins are crap, and EMUI took it to another level)
If I recall correctly, I drove 10 in total;
- Unknown Sony Erricson "classic" (I wouldn't call it "dumb") phone
- Samsung Galaxy S4 - loved it's software. Unluckily I lost it in forest, and it's the only phone I ever lost
- MyPhone Hammer Axe - gosh what a crap
- LG L9 - If I recall I was critical of it's performance, but very likely it was because of bloatware I installed back then
- Huawei P20 - If it wasn't worth 300PLN when I was getting rid of it, I'd just f****n' burn it
- OnePlus 3T - First phone with aftermarket system :> LineageOS 18.1
- OnePlus 3T + OnePlus 5 - Went akimbo, though only 3T had a SIM (5 was supposed to be a reserve). Both downgraded to LineageOS 15.1
- Hammer Boost LTE dumbphone + OnePlus 5 - Attempt to escape from Android stupidity. Quality has progressed since Axe, but still meh
- Pixel 8 - GrapheneOS, current main. The way I got it was pretty weird. I love to exploit it's water resistance
- Pixel 8 + OnePlus 7T Pro - Went dual again, this time with two SIMs. I've noticed I get bored with phones if I use them too long (read one-two weeks xD), so I bought meself a "toy" (The only deciding factor was motorized pop-up camera. Seriously.). Also it's nice to have a on-site backup when anything happens to Pixel (I.e. I can find one phone with another, use OnePlus when Pixel is discharged etc.)
