In the long run, better than Vista. But not XP. XP is pretty basic, takes up less disk space, and is easier to modify than the other two versions.

I hope they don't retire XP, it's the only Windows OS I use anymore.

As in the "you find the bugs for us" version that M$ are pumping out. Free for the next half year.

I've just burned one onto a DVD to try out on a spare laptop. Once upon a time it had Vista on it, but I got sick of its demands for attention so I used it as a Ubuntu testcase. Don't forget to get the 64-bit version if you've a Core Duo processor to put it on.

No, it looks as though it's staying with Ubuntu for the moment - Windows 7 doesn't want to install itself on a NTFS partition. What does it think, it'll get its pretty skirt dirty if it plays with something other than FAT32?

They will.. just as they will do for every Windows release that comes out. Service pack 3 is, according to what I have read, the last service pack for Windows XP.

I think that Windows 7 will be better than Vista and I also think that many companies which decided to stick with XP instead of upgrading to Vista will be going for Windows 7.

Windows XP still works pretty good for gaming purposes, other than that I don't really care. Linux is the way to go, in my opinion.

Ah, the great intelligence of a corporation: kill off the good product and sell the others.
(I'm not saying that Windows 7 won't be good, just that XP was the last version of Windows that had any shred of a good OS.)

Hey, I'm getting there. I've replaced the 32-bit Ubuntu with a 64-bit version, and installed Sun VirtualBox.

Now all I need is the memory upgrade and VirtualBox will virtualise me a Windows 7 install. Gosh, this is fun....

At least my poor little G2S, designed as a 64 bit machine but shipped with a 32-bit Vista installation, is running a grown-up system at last.

Anyone know what the retail price for a Windows 7 is going to be?

I've played with Windows 7 (in a VM using VirtualBox) a few times, but I'm not that excited for it. Better than Vista, but I don't have any need to ditch XP x64 Edition yet. On the other hand, I'm trying to figure out why I can't get my Ubuntu partition to boot.

I still remember Windows 2000 - Now THAT was a good operating system

Certainly not ME. Win2k was a better system than NT4. I know nothing about CE.

Probably partially due to my aspie traits I just can't let XP go. I don't like the Vista interface as it doesn't work the way I expect or want it to. It feels too much like a Mac to me.

I personally think its the best M$ OS so far. Completely suprised me... But I'll still take Knoppix over it any day. On a side note... haven't there already been at least 3 different threads on this?

What is keeping XP alive for the moment is the advent of Net-books and of
course as I reported a few months ago about Vista and its issues.....
Here in case anyone needs a refresher: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt86634.html
