A command line will probably make more sense if you see it. Here is an example of a session on a Linux command line. In this session someone just logged in, at which point the system gave a lot of information about the user's last login, OS specifications and the like. The user asked for a list of the files and directories available from their home directory. This isn't the sort of thing that you'd normally use a terminal for because it can be just as easy or easier to do it graphically. But there is some stuff that is easier to do from the command line, like accessing restricted files or changing the permissions on them (which is actually a more mundane example).

An Athlon XP 1600+ with ~503GB of RAM? Y'know, something here just doesn't seem quite right to me, but I have no idea what that might be.

Windows 7 is great on newer hardware. While XP is good its dated 10 years and doesn't have hardware support for newer hardware dated after 2007. (For the exception of anemic Netbooks and Nettops.) To install a SATA driver on XP you need a floppy. Where else Windows 7 you can use a USB Key. Or supports your SATA by default. Linux supports all SATA Drives and most hardware be default.

Now if your computer come with XP originally I wouldn't install 7 on it. Unless your Manufacturer has Official 7 Drivers and your computer has over 2 GB of Ram. With Memory over 2 GB your computer is better off with 7. Below you do better with XP..

Linux and in particular Debian I still prefer however.

microsoft should not lend their imprimatur to sales of windows 7 PCs with less than 3G of RAM and with sub-pentium/athlon processors and slow hard drives. i wasted $350 on such a machine that is little more than a paperweight. a time-wasting, maddening paperweight.

I just pulled this picture off of a Google search. I suspect this machine is a large server.

My last notebook had a SATA drive and XP. No floppy was needed to install a driver. Older versions of XP had issues with SATA drives as they came out just after XP hit the market, but later versions of XP with SP2 installed had no issues with SATA at all.

No, you didn't waste your money. Just install Linux, for free.

I say that manufacturers should not sell computers with 32-bit Operating Systems. For the exception of computers with less than 2 GB of Ram such as Netbooks. I am currently using a Toshibia Satellite Notebook with an Athlon II Dual-Core, 3 GB of Ram and 320G Hard Drive. It still had 32-Bit 7 Home Premium. I called Toshiba to ask for 64-Bit media and they said my model didn't support it. Well I installed 64-Bit 7 and it actually runs faster than 32-bit 7. Not to mention why did Toshiba advertise that I can have 8 GB of Ram in my laptop if Toshiba themselves only support the 32-bit version of 7. Shame!! My Laptop is one of them Cheap $500 Ones that were at Wal-Mart around the time 7 was released. It runs Fine! Now if it had Vista on the other hand. Then again I also wiped the drive clean and did an install without all the OEM Crapware from Toshiba.

It was awful until i brought a laptop. Now i like it.
My opinion: XP is good for computers, 7 for laptops.
