I got an iPhone 3GS for my birthday this August and I love it
Yes, the apps are quite fun to shop for, I love that some are even free!
I have over 200 apps right now, I have a few favorites such as:

-Shazam (listens to a song and tells you the name and who sings it)
-MapItAreaCD (figures out area codes)
-TWI (funny to read)
-FML (passes the time by)
-Dots Free (fun game)
-Police Radio (really cool)
-Speller (like spell check, comes in handy)
-Mancala (really fun game)
-Pinball RC (cool, sorta expensive though)
-ZIPcodes (i like memorizing zip codes for some reason)
-Paper Toss (good time passer, really fun game)
-SnowLite (like snowboarding)
-Frogger (loved this game)
-Game of Life (fun board game just like the app)
-Fling (awesome game, very challenging at times)
-Gears (hard but fun game)

for improving spatial (3d) skills:
- Laby3d (has free version)

Words with Friends - there is a free version with ads and paid one without.

Basically it's scrabble and you can play against other friends or a random opponent. It is turn based so you don't have to play a whole game at one. You simply make your move and then check the app down the track and your opponent may have made their move. You can have heaps of games going at once so you've usually got some moves to make. If you're both online at the same time you can play like a regular game if you like.

I've only recently got an iPhone and I'm still kinda playing with it so I don't know many quality apps (I'm def gonna try some of the ones you guys've posted). but one that's become a life saver is iProcrastinate. I also use Free Wi-Fi finder, Skype (sorry Orwell ), WakeTunes, Rise'n'Shine (yess, I need at least 3 different alarms to wake me up lol), sudoku, Facebook and Tumblr. oh and classic Snake, I love it

There is Wurdle (free and kinda like boggle)
Photoshop (do basic stuff like crop etc.)
Yelp (check restaurant reviews etc, location aware)
Pandora (listen to streaming music)
Stoneloops (basic game but fun)
Google search (voice search that is pretty accurate)
ATT Wireless (check minutes and txts usage)
RedLaser (scan product barcodes and get online prices, it works surprisingly well)
Topple (kinda like Jenga with strange pieces to stack)

There are a lot of reviews on youtube. I don't entirely go by their star ratings.

This is slightly irrelevant because I have a Blackberry Pearl. On that phone I have JmIRC, Pandora, AIM, Opera Mini 5 beta and Facebook. The only thing the iPhone version has that the Bberry one doesn't and that is the chat feature. Hopefully that will be in the next update.
