I did all this, reinstalled the older version of Ubuntu, then just said "screw it" and downloaded Mint 8, Helena. i am now using Mint, and it is so much nicer and simpler than Ubuntu. My sound card was found right away and loading the driver to my wireless card was a snap. The only odd thing is that I have to open up the Gnome Alsa mixer and un-mute the master once I boot up.

Does anyone know the script that will change the default settings for Gnome Alsa mixer upon startup?

sudo alsactl store is supposed to save your current settings.

I find (in Ubuntu 9.10, I don't know about Mint) that the system tray volume control settings are stored, and right-click gives loads more options. The new alsa stores per-application volume settings too, so those also need checking with the application running.
