"Let them hate us as long as they fear us" - or however you say that in Latin...;)

Its security and lack of viruses stem from the fact that around 1% of PC users have Linux, compared to 7% for Macs, and the rest are all Windows.

Most Linux users are angry and elitist and generally respond to newcomers' questions and pleas for help by spewing out dozens of lines of command-line code that you have to sit and tediously type into the terminal.

Again, that's fine in the server world, but anybody sitting with a distro of Linux on their personal computer is probably an angry person with a superiority complex.

no, I usually just highlight the "dozens of lines of command-line code" with the left mouse button and paste them into a terminal by pressing the wheel straight down. I don't buy the scarcity of Linux machines as the reason for their security, they are high value targets for crackers

There are any number of valid reasons why Linux would be more secure than Windows. Who cares what they are. If you need security get Linux.

You can't debate that it's obfuscated to hell though and that the community has an attitude problem toward people who are asking questions they consider below them.

Ouch. As I sit here with my perfectly running Linux box typing to you, not having to EVER open the command line... I feel I should be offended. But somehow I cannot bring myself to that level.

I do use Linux. I don't consider myself a guru, but I've been known to write kernel modules and various other fairly hardcore software development. I do have to open the command line on a regular basis, and when I do, you can rest assured that a browser with the Google home page is going to be in the next window.

That shouldn't be necessary.

I've found people more than willing to help whenever I've run into trouble with Linux, and there is generally good documentation available. In a lot of ways it is easier to work with (for my purposes at least) than OS X or Windows. Perhaps it is partly just that I am more familiar with Linux than with Windows, but familiarity=user-friendliness is always accepted as a valid argument from Windows users.

Linux is overrated. Sure, it's great for servers, but to say it's better than Windows 7 for a consumer desktop machine is a load of bunk.

What would you rather have?

Easy access to nearly every computer program in existence (Windows programs, emulation, etc.)

or

Only being able to run free, open-source software, which leaves you with not much choice?

Sure, Windows 7 is not perfect, but then again, NEITHER IS LINUX! :D

And it so happens that Windows 7 is way better than Ubuntu or similar Linux distros.

It's funny that you should mention emulators, because Linux has this neat little thing called Wine... look it up. :D

And my point still remains. Most people who hate Linux either hate it because they're loyal to Micro$oft, or (in this case) because it doesn't fit their notion of "cool".

Wine is clearly not production ready. It runs a number of programs without too many issues.

You're correct. Being a pain in the ass to use in a desktop environment (admittedly subjective) is outside my realm of cool. So is having an outdated kernel (since I write a fair amount of code at the kernel level).

You forgot to mention that the people who worship Linux like it's the best thing since sliced bread are a good people most people hate Linux.

Like I said, Linux is WAY overrated.

In 1993 it was actually pretty awesome, considering the alternative was Windows 3.1. Unfortunately the development curve of Windows since then has been at least twice as steep as Linux. Most of the mandarins in charge of the kernel are crusty old 50 year olds who don't like change and the UI design is mostly done by programmers, which is a no-no.

Maybe the ignorant jocks and 13-year-olds you hang out with hate it, but most people don't. They hate it for the same reason they laugh at anyone with an interest in mathematics, science, literature, or classical music. It's "for dorks".

And MyFutureSelfAndMe, all computer user interfaces are written by programmers. Duh!
