I can't do mental maths - and I never could memorize tables. At the age of 7/8 I was getting in to trouble at school for being so terrible at maths, it was starting to be labelled as a problem....except my teacher could see if I had a piece of paper in front of me I could do maths way above the rest of the class (and probably school). I still can't do tables.

At 35 I can do 1s, 2s, 5s, 10s. and I can do small numbers of 3 (upto about 10, but I'm flakey on 7x3 & 8x3).

.....I was accepted as an undergraduate to read Maths at Oxford.....

I know mine by rote up to 12x12 and I can do beyond that fairly quickly in my head. That's only because I teach basic maths. If I didn't use it at work, my mental arithmetic skills would go rusty.

I was bad at mental arithmetic at school and I was also the stupidest student in top-set (higher level) maths. I should've been in a lower set but because I was good at other subjects, they kept me there so I could keep making a bigger fool of myself when answering questions.
