I never got a warranty in the first place. Where do I find the model number?

Did you buy the laptop second-hand then? The model number should be printed on a label attached to the bottom of the machine.

That looks like a serial number.

You're talking about service contracts, also known as "extended warranties." The laptop may however be covered by the manufacturer's warranty. You should check the documentation that came with it.

I've worked on one computer bought at Wal-Mart (not my own). Never again! You could probably find a better computer picking through people's trash than going to Wal-Mart. (If what I heard is correct, they get the 'seconds', rejects, whatever, from each company and then sell them...) I tend to believe that rumour, because the computer I tried to get running - new out of the box - was so messed up that I wanted to drive a stake through its heart. It turned out it was not even new, because the service code for that machine had been activated months before... perhaps it was a warranty return that got sold on to Wal-Mart, I don't know.

Possibly. I've heard a handful of people say Wal-Mart sells crappy stuff in general. One person who told me that said Wal-Mart laptops are okay, though, and he used to work at Wal-Mart. I should've just gone with a $250-$300 laptop, but no, I wanted the $500 purple one.

If the drive is bad, replace it with a Seagate, I have no idea how big the drive in your computer is, but a 500GB Seagate will cost around 70-90 $US. If the drive is bad, then it's bad, and considering the fact that there was no warranty on the computer, you can't do anything else but spend the extra cash for a decent drive. FWIW, I'm almost certain that the drive in your system is a Hitachi or something worse. Hitachi drives tend to have somewhat spotty QC.
