that and also feature wise of the os iiself, there is a huge backend with windows to ensure this and that and something completely unrelated afterwards.

linux allows you to choose the actual components of your os,

Expounded somewhat on that for you. :P

You know what I hate about windows?

It download updates and stuff without even asking me! Then it ask me if I want to install it! How rude is that to not ask me before wasting all my maximum download limit!! !!
It harass me to update something when I don't want to! And if I don't respond it will restart automatically the computer!
It takes ages to install these stupid unwanted updates!

I want a system that won't harass me like this. I use Ubuntu, it does have a lot of small bugs but I prefer it a lot more to windows 7.

Turn off automatic updates. Or set it to notify but not download. PEBKAC.

Why do so many people switch to linux, proclaim their soul to only use it and denounce Windows and all things MS, and then want to install Wine? You hypocrites. Only joking, lol.

Well it's a bit of a pet peeve of my own that Windows installs some software after asking and some without. Autoupdate can be turned off for those who are on a limited data plan, but the restart is inexcusable.
Why that darn little box can only wait a max. of 4 hours before coming back I don't know, but any UI designer with the least bit of knowledge would have made that a notification, not a threat to your unsaved work (that especially includes games as you can't see the window whe it pops under).

the ONLY reason that I still run Windows is because i'm a gamer. I don't want freeciv or lincity I want the real deal (Civilization and Sim City resprctively), not to mention that games ported to Linux are bloody hard to get hold of, especially in one of the most MS-ass-kissing nations on the planet...

Yep that's what I dislike.

There's a easy way out. I install Windows7 and Ubuntu on 2 separate disk fragments. So when my computer starts, it automatically load Ubuntu unless I ask it otherwise. This way I can start windows if I need to play some game or use some windows-only software.

It's very useful too even if you don't use Ubuntu because if you get a windows virus, then you can delete the virus, save your important files or reformat your Windows drive while in Ubuntu. So you get to have a functional working computer with all your precious data even if your windows is all screwed up.

I think there are ways to install some games through Wine on Linux as well. You use this piece of software called PlayOnLinux. Here's a link to the discussion board: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt176232.html. It's the fourth post down.

Windows in general isn't a good system. Install Linux or buy a Mac.

Maybe but linux-versions of video drivers are often very buggy. It was one hell of a job to install corectly my amd driver on ubuntu and I don't think it work perfectly yet...
Just do a windows partition, it's always better to have windows just in case you need some program that is windows-only compatible.

One very good solution is to stick with NVidia hardware. I've never had a problem with it or the Linux drivers. (or the Windows drivers either, if it comes to it)

i actually like windows 7 and vista once i got a decent computer that didn't randomly crash with it.

the only thing about 7 i didn't like was the drag a window into the corner and make it fullscreen feature. if i'm going to reposition my windows i will do it myself, once i turned that off i was happy.

and some games that vista wouldn't run at all run on my win 7, sure you have to do a bunch of patches and crap, but i can get them to run. no amount of tweaking or patching would have got them on my vista.

the only thing that should have stayed was gif animation, if you have an animated gif it will not animate unless it is opened in the internet browser.

but there are a ton of features i love, my fav is pinning your most used programs or games to the taskbar, i don't know how i got by without this anymore.

Well I installed Linux Mint 12 and I am quite impressed with it, it installed everything to get me going. I updated my nvdia drivers and codecs etc. So I have installed it alongside windows.

What I am concerned about it all, is that if it becomes more popular and I do support it believe me, that we are going to see virus writers try to create virus's, I know it would be a lot harder than windows. That is what I meant.

"if it becomes more popular" that is the reason it has no viruses, windows gets hacked and infected all the time, because hackers know a business is more likely to have windows.

it's like anything if something gets to popular it gets the good and the bad, like ff7 is extremely popular and it has hate and fame and is more talked about then nearly every other final fantasy, youtube is one of the most popular web pages ever made and it has attracted all kinds. windows was probably hard to hack at first but now windows is so widely used that it was only a matter of time before the bad stuff came.

besides i don't want to have to learn a totally new os, windows is familiar, the most supported, and most popular. it's not the best in the world but with anything else you can hardly get games or software because they are not supported.

i know i'm sticking by microsoft till my dying day, except then it comes to the xbox.

Yes i agree

linux is great and has the potential to become a mainstream OS but Windows is easy to use and vendors support it

Difference is Linux is free and open source
