Yeah I can only say that in practice with things I've worked on, the iPad 3 is an order of magnitude or two faster and the iPad 2 is slightly faster. The iPhone 4S is slightly faster.

My beef with the Apple iPad is the nonreplaceable batterys, non "Advance"user serviceable parts, Locked down OS, Restricted

The only way I would own a iPad and use it is if someone gave me one for free. the only product that I have from apple is 2 things an Apple II/GS and SE/30

Yes I am an Android User and Fan because it is open and I can do what I want.

Cheaper? You must be kidding. A basic iPad costs almost twice what I paid for my laptop and has less computing power. It also lacks a physical keyboard, optical drive, USB port and must be held to be useful.

It's not intended to be used for things that require significant keyboard input. A laptop and an iPad are two separate classes of product.

I must say that while an iPad is great to have, it is not a replacement for a proper laptop. While writing in a tablet is much better than writing in a cellphone, a proper keyboard is still better. Jailbreaking is a must if you want to get it's full potential (cosmetic things like themes, more important ones like being able to download stuff and to access the iPad's internal folders, and there is even some comand prompt stuff out there. iPads are quite fast too, and for navigating the web they are really handy.

It is true the cost is an issue (it is why I don't like apple.. ridiculous overpricing). However the Ipad is not a laptop. No tablet is. Yet at least.

The Ipad is what long ago was called a PDA. Personal Digital Assistant. Its an input device not a processing device. You put in the data you work with during the day and if you need to process the data in some way (video editing, graphics, etc) you plug it to a real computer, download the data and work with it there.

The ipad is almost like a remote control.

In fact, I use my Ipad to remotely control my PC at home. That way I can have both the crazy mobility of the Ipad with the full power of my pc anywhere I have cellphone data connection (4G).

I really look forward to what google and other ipad competitors can come up with.

I imagine that a Windows RT tablet like the Surface might actually be a good solution for this (MS Office included).

You don't get it _only_ for reading. I use mine primarily for reading stuff, but I also occasionally write e-mail and surf the web. It's just more convenient and instantly available for those occasions.
I also have a Kindle but it's actually sitting on the shelve now because I always read on tablets (one of the reasons being the touch support for dictionaries or links, which is a big improvement over the keypad thing).

Yes you can. Ipad can easily do word processing. I typed up a few papers on it when I was overseas and had to turn in webcourse assignments.

It is not very pleasant though. the keyboard taking half the screen can be outright annoying and its not as fast as with a keyboard one is used to. But it does do it.

However the purpose of the Ipad is that you use it in conjunction with a real computer.

You can own an iPad and not a computer if you don't write or edit long documents and don't really do any serious computing.

The kindle is not great for reading PDF documents, unless you can get hold of a 9 inch kindle dx, and they are far more expensive than regular kindles.
But if you want a 9 or 10 inch tablet for reading PDFs, there are several that are far cheaper than the kindle dx or the iPad. Of course, the cheaper they are, the poorer the quality - generally speaking.
HP Touchpads are quite cheap, mainly because they don't use the Android operating system.

As of this moment, my iPad is faster at loading webpages than my three year old laptop :?
