When Hoyle coined the phrase, he was actually trying to ridicule the idea. It's similar to the famed Schroedinger thought-experiment in quantum physics, where the cat is neither alive nor dead until someone opens the box and collapses its wave-function through observation. Schroedinger was actually trying to mock the idea of indeterminacy; instead he gave it a brilliantly clear example.

Many terms are like that- originally derogatory.

A surgeon in the British Army stationed in the rebelious American colonies wrote a little ditty for his troops that made fun of the hayseed colonists that they were fighting. According to the song the Americans were so rustic that they would "stick a feather in their caps and call it 'high fashion'".

When the colonial rebels themselves got wind of the new song they LOVED it and made it there own. And on the Fourth we Americans still sing "Yankee Doodle" as a patriotic song even though makes gentle fun of us.

BTW: Italy was the trendsetting country in late 18th Centurey Europe in foods, clothing, music, and everything. So if something was really cool or trendy you called it "macaroni".

I Kabalistc version of the Big Bang exis. This is a religious parable, not a scientific hypothesis or explanation. The Rabbis tell us that at the beginning of creation the Creator burst the vessels that contained Light and it spread outward and everywhere. The Creator made this explosion of Light, so there would be room in which to place His creations. At the end of all things, the vessels will be mended and the Light put back in them.

It is purely a religious parable and one should not try to read any science into it.
