Now, the other side of the coin, if we do develop sentient life, then it does matter how we treat such life.

While these transhumanist technologies may only be available to the rich at first, who says they won't spread to poorer countries? Pretty much any technology, once it develops, will spread around the world unless laws are developed in certain countries to keep it out.
