The real space race will be who can extract and use off-world resources first. Aside from helium-3, there isn't anything on the moon that we can't find down here, but having equipment in space that isn't limited by weight, size, or shape could go a long way towards setting up an off-world infrastructure, and getting to resources that are scarce down here.
