Oh, wait, this is that pesky "context" thing I've heard so much about, isn't it.

Well, not everyone is as "tech savvy" as you. And most people who have had their computers destroyed and had to spend their hard earned money replacing it have a similar disdain for the term, even if you experts take offense at our interpretation. Explain to me please why you take such pride in the term "hacker," because outside the realm of hackers the term is not so praise worthy.

I'm quite computer savy (a professional programmer for thirty years) and to be honest I generally hear the word "hacker" in the context of someone who gains illegal access to other people's computers, usually with the intent to steal confidential documents or cause damage to the system. The word hacker tends to be used less to indicate someone with computer technical prowess.

But it shouldn't take someone with computer skills to understand that the hackers who are gathering together for a conference in New York are probably not the same hackers that are out committing felonies on the Internet.

A hacker is someone who exploits weaknesses in software or hardware (it doesn't matter what his intentions are). It doesn't require that you're a computer expert, it's not necessarily hard, and unless it's used for malice, it's not illegal. Very rarely do you need anything more high-tech than a web browser or a decompiler/disassembler. Help from hackers is why Windows 8.x, Facebook, and Android are extremely secure systems.

In any case, hackers who do use their skills for malice can go f.ck themselves.

Also these:

http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/meaning-of-hack.html

This word has a long and well-established history, only recently corrupted by the lazy popular press.
And no, this simplistic "hacker = criminal" definition doesn't count as a valid redefinition or word evolution, etc.
It's just plain wrong.

Hackers are just as much scum as are pedophiles. Using your knowledge to intrude on the privacy of others by climbing around inside an unsuspecting persons computer or other device is not different than NSA intrusions. I have no respect for hackers. Hackers destroy the internet.

Just a suggestion, but you should probably know what you're talking about before you post something online.

So there are not hackers on the internet climbing around inside the computers of unsuspecting, innocent internet users? There is no escuse or justification for someone to use their knowledge of technology to intrude upon the privacy of others.

I don't know, I guess, the technological PC term for "hacker." It seems like being called a "hacker" in the tech community, carries some level of prestige, for whatever reason, but amongst the world of casual internet users I think the term "hacker" is associated with sinister and nefarious activity. Whether or not you agree, any person or entity who slips a program onto my computer without my consent is a hacker. I am the one who paid for my equipment. Just because you have some level of expertise that is beyond my capabilities does not give you the right to infiltrate my devices, for whatever reason you might find justification for. Use your knowledge to make all the money you want. Be proud of what you know and do, if pride is your thing, but keep your bits and bytes out of my devices unless I ask you to climb around inside my stuff.

Define "Hackers" you could mean someone who just knows how to DDos someone because they like watched a you-tube tutorial or someone who has lots of experience, or some bored ass college student who wants to make a crappy piece of malware and upload it on TPB claiming it's scat porn and wants to see if anybody actually believes that it's gonna be in a .EXE file

Also there is something called an ethical hacker who tests out companies security systems for a price and because of these people companies can make sure that there data and financial info is safe from anyone who poses a threat

Not all hackers are about gaining illegal access to computers.
