Artficial Intelligence today
Hmmm.. Do you mean business just want complete automation so that they could get lazy somehow?? Sounds like slaves (robots) then eventually going to rebellion.. History repeats but only on the information age..
On one point, augmented intelligence plus hardware AI has total greater net intelligence than a standalone.
Yes, it could be. The thing that intrigues me the most is what will happen when we reach the technological singularity, which will likely be sometime within the next fifty years.

When artificial intelligence surpasses that of humans and the A.I.'s start to develop even more intelligent computers / robots etc. It is theorised that there will be an exponential explosion in machine intelligence with totally unknown consequences; benign or disastrous for humanity. I suspect that by this stage, human programming languages will be obsolete as will be human programmers... and possibly the human race!
Do not take all of Kurzweil's predictions seriously. He is slightly daft on the issue of the Singularity.

To me computers become smarter and smarter, but also servers which send their intelligence to the clients. Then I am thinking about Google and how hard they work on it. Google Now for example is smarter than it was when I first saw it on my smartphone.
Also I am interested in TTS, Text-To-Speech synthesiz. A computer's voice can have the same intonation than a human voice has. It will be way harder to tell whether a specific sentence is spoken by a human or by a computer. I think of the Google Maps on my smartphone when I switch on the navigation and it tells me where to walk, to bike or to drive the car to.
Until now a programming language is hard to speak and there was no need to be aple to speak it. You have to program by typing in the commands. Google Now and Siri accept spoken commands and they answer either visually or by voice. If you say "What is the temperature in London?" the question will be analyzed and the smartphone (probably with the help of the Google or Siri server) answer appropriately.
Talking about AI and robots, the first thing I think of, is Honda Asimo.

It has advanced listening ability. It can listen to three people at the same time (that is: when three people are talking, it can recognize what has been told and who told it).
Asimo not only processes what humans tell it and not only knows how to respond, but also has the ability to visually recognize the environment, recognize humans, knows how to hold objects made of soft (paper) or hard material (metal). It also know how to handle stairs. It can both walk and run (about 6 MPH).

The Singularity is a sore spot in the middle of Ray Kurtzweil's brain. We are no closer to creating general and autonomous intelligence with non organic parts than we were 50 years ago.
AI is a futile quest. If for no other reason than we do not even know with -real- intelligence is.
We have no idea of how consciousness is possible, but we have consciousness just the same.
My hypothesis is that humans are not smart enough to figure that problem out and we are just chasing are tails in circles.
Better to be reconciled in having clever ways of programming our computers.

If the search for AI is futile....and it very well may be....there are advances occurring in CS because of the attempt. I judge that to have value. I think Kurweil's ideas are a bit too simplistic. We cannot even agree on an operationalized definition of intelligence or consciousness....I won't be holding my breath.
If/when 'true' QC is actualized that will dramatically change Science. I do think QC is realistic.
One thing I will say is that I do not like the idea of perfecting AI and being drawn to it being more important without working on ways to improve the mental health and intellectual capacity of humans and work on eliminating genetic diseases, cancers, mental disabilities and other severe illnesses. The idea of mastering AI without mastering how to eliminate the fundamental physical and mental problems with humans is an idea I am not ok with at all. It seems a subset of humans want AI to do out actual living for us. It also seems like we embracing natural tendencies to focus on doing as little work as possible rather than making things better for fellow man and woman.
