Shep, I'd be interested in seeing screenshots, and I'm concerned about that Start menu and the folders.

I have a year-old laptop that came with Windows 8.1 and I hate this OS. I too have an icon in my taskbar offering Windows 10 for free and I'm sorely tempted.

Does it do away with some of this slidey, mouse to the side menus and such? I miss the simplicity of XP.

Does it keep things like Windows MovieMaker? I know it's only basic but I like to use it for simple home video editing and such.

I got the icon to install Win10 the other day, but I uninstalled the update for it because I couldn't get rid of it any other way, and it's not like I'd be eligible in the first place. My copy of Windows isn't exactly *ahem* legit. :P But whatever, I like 7, and if 10 is anything like 8 or 8.1, it likely won't have proper DirectDraw support, which means that older games won't work well.

I forgot about things like games working with it....and now that I think of it, my Windows 8.1 never let me get my old Sims game running, and it also doesn't work the normal way with my digital camera uploads, although I've found a way to import anyway, it's just awkward and has to be half-manual.

I'm now thinking if I install Windows 10, it will take me even further away from any of my old stuff working properly with it.

Microsoft has said that it will upgrade even illegal copies of Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. They don't care.

But then I'll be stuck with a non-genuine copy of Win10 that probably won't receive updates. If I get Windows 10, I'm probably going to buy an actual copy. My copy of 7 receives updates, because the very exploit I used is something that can't be patched by MS unless they want to invalidate a bunch of legitimate volume licenses.

I know, software piracy has its pitfalls, and I don't recommend it, but I wanted to get off the sinking ship that was XP, and there was no way I was installing 8.

Sure thing! Any particular areas of interest regarding the screenshots? Or just in general?

The thing where you move your mouse to the right of the monitor, and that side menu slides open, that's gone. Frankly I never knew what it was supposed to do anyways other than annoy the crap out of you (which it does for me). 10 takes quite a few of the introduced-after-7 pitfalls and removes them.

Just searched for "Movie", and "Windows Live Movie Maker" popped up among the results. Of course, I did already have it installed on Windows 7 (and I only know because I re-arranged its location in the start menu, and it's still in that old location), but it wasn't removed if that's what you're asking.

With the free update? I can see them upgrading the illegal versions if you miss the "free upgrade" period and pay for it, but I'm surprised they'd upgrade it even if you don't. Where'd they say that? I'm curious now.

Hi Shep, any screenshots of anything you think is relevant would be great, I don't mind what it is.

I'm glad to hear they've taken away that menu that slides out at the right of the screen, yes! It's a nuisance and I never use it.

That just proves how much Microsoft is DESPERATE to not have Windows 10 turn out like Visa. Nobody has a NEED to upgrade from XP or 7 just for the sake of it. New hardwarde is often the key reason to need a newer OS.

That means 10 will have very little market share and less influence for Microsoft on the rest of the computer community.

If you want to be rid of the annoying icon that prompts you to upgrade, go into Windows Update, pull up installed updates and UNINSTALL KB3035583. You likely will need to reboot. Next time it shows it available to install, tell Windows to ignore it.

What makes you think that you wonb't be able to recive for win 10 if you have a non-genuine copy of it? :?:
Win 8.1 doesen't blocks win updates just only a few minor things which are not counts at all and only a watermark is in the right down corner.

The only thing you can't do with a non-genuine copy of Win10 is personalize. That means you're stuck with the default background and what not. The "non-genuine" watermark is also no longer just on the background but actually on the screen itself. It means you'll always see the message about it not being activated, even if you're watching a video full screen on your primary monitor. At least it doesn't show on secondary monitors.

Windows Update works fine while non-genuine.

I know this because I didn't install my build until they deactivated all the Insider Preview keys back on the 15th. -_-

With this and the fact that you can't manually control Windows Updates without some major tweaking, I'm probably not going to bother with Windows 10.

I'm not sure. I downloaded the preview from the parallels convenience store when the windows 10 preview became available.
