Getting firefox is hard? All I did was pretty download and then run through the installation wizard. Even I can do that. :)

And it's true I find changes hard. I was very reluctant to use something with windows 7 but when I realized it was basically vista I was fine. Windows 10 looks between windows 8 and 7 and I'm not sure how long it would take to adjust but the fact it's free for a year is tempting me.

Installing Firefox isn't hard on Windows, it just takes much, much shorter on Linux.

In Windows you have to download the file, open it, follow the instructions on the installation wizard and you can then boot it up.

On Linux you type in a short command either sudo apt-get install firefox, apt-get install firefox, pacman -S firefox or some other short command. It'll download then you just type in firefox in the terminal and it comes up.

If it's tempting you to take a look, get an old computer that you don't use anymore and try it on that computer, if you like it, keep it! You'll restore a slow computer.

If that computer is to old to even run, install Ubuntu and try to install Windows 10. If it is only compatible with Windows then use Wine. At least that's what I would do.

Don't install something on your computer that you may or may not enjoy, why take a risk? Stick to Windows 7, if you want to try it out use a different computer and if you like it you have just successfully restored an old computer.

I have an old computer but it's on vista. So the upgrade wouldn't be free. It overheats after 20 minutes and quite frankly I think it's a fire hazard.

Yes and Yes. If you like win 7 but think that the 3rd grade level os that MS tried to fob off on us as 8 is crap then definitely yes. Market pressure does work.

Haha. Before I tell you to not upgrade, how do you upgrade? Does it send a download link for an iso file? Is it something else?

Also I think you can install Windows 7 for free on any computer. If that is not true I'll send you my product activation code for Windows 7 Home Premium I think I have 2 product codes, I also have 2 for Windows 8.1.

By the way your computer that runs Windows Vista probably overheats because there are a lot of processes happening in that machine because of all the stuff you downloaded. If you were selling that computer for 100 dollars I'd buy it, I could turn it into a Debian server.

Just be aware that Windows 10 will send virtually all your data to Microsoft (and who knows who else). Check out https://edri.org/microsofts-new-small-p ... ta-abused/ and https://jonathan.porta.codes/2015/07/30 ... -defaults/

Quote:
By default, when signing into Windows with a Microsoft account, Windows syncs some of your settings and data with Microsoft servers, for example “web browser history, favorites, and websites you have open” as well as “saved app, website, mobile hotspot, and Wi-Fi network names and passwords”.

Quote:
We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary

Of course, you are always trusting your OS vendor with your data - that's unavoidable. But now they're basically saying "we will take all your data and do whatever we want with it"!

I have Microsoft Word, Powerpoint 2010, One Note, etc, all from 2010 that I paid a couple hundred for. I know when I had some problems with my computer I had to do a hard reset and lost all of that info. Thank God I still had my serial numbers to get it back. I'm afraid that if I upgrade to Windows 10 it will delete those files again. Does anyone know for sure if it will or won't?

I deleted most things on the vista when I moved stuff over so there isn't much on it. Think there may be pictures, may as well use the storage right? I don't think the fans work, probably full of dust, had it... 7 or more years and used it everyday until 2013 but I've never taken the back off of it (don't worry, I can hear you all cringing at the thought of the mess the inside is  ).

And yes, I heard what they do. They probably do that anyway. Just now they're telling us. I don't do anything illegal so all they really can do is judge my search history which isn't too bad in my defence. But I doubt it's of any interest other than data collection for target audiences or whatever they do rather than a personal iliketrees witch hunt.

And a notification has come up on my task bar but I haven't clicked it because I don't know what happens when you do so I'm just letting it sit there really.

I do have the disc for windows 7 but I think I'll just leave it in vista. One of the most hard operating systems but actually my favorite if I'm being honest. Other than the overheating the thing has no problems at all with it. I don't like how windows 7 groups together multiple windows of chrome into one icon. I liked it being separate like the operating systems before it. And vista had the search feature on the start menu which I don't think the ones before it had so that was nice. :) Windows 7 is basically vista with a different task bar as far as this idiot is concerned. :P

Dust accumulation is probably what that is. It is really easy to fix via pressurization however if you can't do that maybe you should remove the accumulated dust by hand.

What are your current specs? I mean, it only calls for 1gig of memory, and the 32bit version only wants 16gb of free hard drive space. (I forget what the processor requirements are.)

I'm going to guess "no". I don't use Microsoft Office or Windows Media Player. I use Open Office and VLC, and all my stuff was still there when I upgraded on one of my machines. (Have only done one machine so far.)

Now again, this was an UPGRADE, not a clean install.

I don't see why 10 would wipe out Microsoft programs when it doesn't wipe out non-Microsoft stuff.

If you read that in context in the EULA, I think you'll find that the language describes cloud services through OneDrive. Windows 10 doesn't give MS infinite license to reach into your hard drive and rummage around when you are not using their network services.

I installed Windows 10 on a couple of my computers today. The laptop has Office 2010, and the first thing I did was open Excel and Word. They seemed to work fine.

The other computer I installed Windows 10 had Windows Media Center. It is one of two computers I use for recording my shows. With Windows 10, Media Center goes completely away. So I am trying out two programs, one is open source, MediaPortal, and the other is JRiverMedia Center, which if I keep it will cost $49.99. That's still less expensive than I paid for the Windows 8.1 Media Center add-on.
