Tim Berners-Lee submits a proposal for a distributed information/communication system at CERN (basis for the much later World Wide Web)
First ISP "The World" begins operations.
Microsoft Office, CorelDraw & Sybase SQL Server introduced.
SCO Unix released.
S3, Tyan, Plexor, KingMax, Iwill, ASUS & Abit founded (notice these "big names" of the era are/were hardware manufacturers)
OSPF network protocol introduced (key to efficient routing of network traffic)

Windows NT 3.51 introduced (it was a big deal for IT depts)
Yahoo!, WebTV, Hotmail, AltaVista, Amazon and Ebay were first brought online.
Netscape went public and introduced the world to crazy-value IPO's; the dot-com era begins.
Internet Explorer 1.0 introduced. 2.0 was introduced later in the year & the Browser Wars with Netscape began.
DirectX 1.0 was introduced, ushering in the era of viable Windows games
HTML 2, USB, SSL & .mp3 standards introduced
"Linux" trademark granted to Linus Torvalds (OS was 4 years old)
