I have Windows ME (7 years and still ticking 8) and it's not terrible but why not just update to Windows Vista? I count the days when I can buy PC #2 not that I havn't gotten attached to the one I have now.

Today i finally tried Windows ME on an old Compaq Presario laying around with a AMD K6-2 Processor @ 400Mhz. Me really wasn`t all that bad once i disabled a lot of System Tray items with MsConfig.
I also download ME capatible drivers ahead of time and saved them on my Flash Drive. Now i`m getting the same performence i get off that same computer with win 98. With the exception that i have USB support and better hardware support.[Drivers that only came out for ME andWin XP.]

There is a universal mass storage driver for Windows 98. http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php

The only computer that can operate tollerably on ME is the (circa 1999) compaq 5450 series. Unfortunately is too is a POS. Conversly the only operating system that runs tollerably on the 5450 is ME. Everything else (it cam loaded with 98SE) got unstable an crashed in about 1-3 months.

I belive the biggest problems with ME was not Microsoft but the end-user. Most people who wer installing ME where installing it on old Pentium Boxes [<200Mhz] with less than enough memory for year 2000 standards.[ People were pretty much installing ME on computers with as little as 32MB Memory.] System Resore [The Restoration program that can restore previous settings via checkpoints.] was not attended for use while running Windows but unstead MS-DOS Boot Disk.

A lot of complaints came from inpreparied people. Nobody was on Driver Websites the night before downloaded drivers and putting them on cd or floppy. Nobody was reading up on the product. They just picked up a copy, put the ME disk in the computer and expected magic. The rest of the problems 98SE and 2000 had also.

Funny, the computer i`m running on right now is a Compaq Presario 5441 [1999]. My is a AMD K6-2 @400Mhz and it is fast. I also am running it on ME. However my computer isn`t on OEM factory settings.
Has been rebuilt in a Generic Adult ATX Case.[MicroATX doesn`t have room for 2 Hard Drives and CD-Drives.] I also got a Sound Blaster Live! card and trashed my 200 Watt Power Supply for a 250Watt.
After i installed ME i set my virtual memory settings to a minimium
of 64MB and a Max of 700MB.[Factory Settings was unlimited.] The system resources on the computer is at 99% Free.[Not what most people expect out of a ME Computer.] After setting everything up i also never seen the blue screen on it and can run Youtube and Runescape at full speed.

Windows ME is the only version of Windows that is worse than Vista

Agreed, When I did software phone Support earlier in my life and Windows ME (any only WinME) destroyed the products database.

Windows ME only work with ME (it's self). You have to go through hoops to get it to work with 98 or 2k pro and still had issues and forget SAMBA support.

At least Windows Me doesn`t have all that Multimedia crap Vista has to attract dumb@$$ AOL users that know nothing about computers. Besides why buy a Directx 10 Capatible Video Card and 2GB+ Memory just for a piece of junk like the Aero Desktop.

I've been using Win 2k (Windows 2000) for several years on my old AMD 2000...;) I think you could pick up a used PC for a song, especially if you're using a 486...I remember those..;)

I've used Dosbox, it has a mixed record of success. Wolfenstein 3d runs fairly well, but Heretic, Descent, Doom 1, and slightly later games don't do that well - jerky and very slow. But if they've upgraded it, I may have to find it again...;)

The Missus had ME, the central component of Microsoft's concrete strategy CE-ME-NT set of operating systems.

Well DosBox is made to run on High-End Systems.

I use Windows 2000 (mostly because i'm too lazy and/or cheap to buy Windows XP and Vista was/is unimpressive to me). Don't use ME. It is evil. Also, just so you know 2000 and ME didn't come with a version of msconfig, so you'll have to download it from the Microsoft site. It runs nicely but some flash based games (like Boomshine and flOw run weirdly, but they're still playable)
