Mac IS a pc...
I don't like MACs.
And the term 'PC' is pretty meaningless. It just means 'personal computer' (surely, that's what a MAC is a type of?).

I use a Mac, but i'm very confused why Apple calls Macs Macs and anything else a PC, because Macs are PC's!
Also, if you whine about Mac's costing more, many non-Macs that are as good as the said computer can cost MORE than a Mac.
Voodoo or Dell anyone?
(Not saying all Dells cost more than Mac's.)
That's what my original argument was. This wasn't supposed to be a thread about macs vs non-macs, it was how apple's campaign (and by extension, every macfan out there) called all non-macs "PC"... as if to set themselves apart from the term "PC" with their condescending holier-than-thou attitude...
The mac's more recent popularity may actually be stemming from NT's finally entering the computer world en-masse. Back in the 80s and even into the mid 90s, the only people who owned their own computer were the computer enthusiasts and video gamers (or nerds, if you like), some university students, and some higher-ups in business who needed them for work. Aspies are more prevalent in most of those categories (except maybe the business one) than they are in the general population, so your average x86 architecture prevailed.
Now that your average NT wants to get a computer, they are so frustrated because the prevailing systems puzzle them (much as they claim that we aspies puzzle them), and they get the more NT-friendly type of pc from apple
Which leads me to a disturbing conclusion: macs are probably going to prevail in the end since NT's outnumber us aspies by as many as 4000:1...
I hardly know anything about Mac's, I don't think I have ever even seen one. Windows based systems seem so easy to work with and there are so many upgrade options that you can do your self that I have never even thought about getting a Mac. I have seen a lot of Mac adverts though.
The Mac and PC marketing seems to have evolved into a standard that allows people to identify which products are PC compatable or Mac compatable.
We identify a "personal computer" as having a keyboard, mouse, screen and case with hardware and an OS and I think it speaks volumes that Apple have chosen to call their product a "Mac". Its almost like a major car manufacturer deciding to say that they don't sell cars and instead make up a fictional name for their product in place of the word "car".
no what we have is not a car it is a "XXXXX"
To me that is what Mac has done with their personal computers. -its a bit daft. I don't believe that a car manufacturer would get away with that marketing wise because everyone knows that a car is a car, and i guess there are some people who don't know that Pc even stands for personal computer. its all about perception and the mac is supposed to be some how better and unique to the Pc.
I believe that they have done this because they don't just want to sell the Mac OS, they want to sell the full Pc complete with hardware which is only Mac compatible. that way they make more money. They dont want to compete with Microsoft so they have evolved their own niche or standard i guess. thats what it seems like to me but I don't know the history. I feel that Mac's are almost fashion items. I don't have anything against macs though the windows based Pc is my personal choice though, I am not even remotely interested in the Mac.

yeah but with minimal research, you can build your own custom pc to be just as powerful as a mac and at half the cost.
I don't hate macs, but I HATE fans who are CONSTANTLY saying "I love it!" yuck.
BTW, macs don't run 3dsmax, suck it!

umm... you're part of the group i'm complaining about... apparently it's not just macfans that separate mac from the general concept of pc's now...
MAC IS A PC <--title of thread

while you're entirely right, most of us just accept social naming conventions for the computers and just laugh at the people who are suckers enough to think that macs are somehow special.
When i bought my Macbook, it was not because of any of those reasons.
Since it was of Intel architecture, I merely included it in the available list of computers that were relevant to my search.
I then compared features to eliminate all that didn't meet my needs, and of the short list of computers that have the features I needed, I picked the cheapest one, which happened to be the MacBook.
For pretty much the same hardware, I got the MacBook for about half the price of the next PC on the list.
Throw in the fact that there's really no reason not to use Mac OS nowadays, and the choice was quite obvious.
Only downside was that I had to ditch all the crappy built-in apple software, everything but the music player and mail client, and get better stuff.
I use my computer for programming and web design mostly.
The hardware is great, Mac OS X is a lot better than Windows at least (haven't crashed or had any problems since I bought it 2 years ago), but Apple are a scary bunch of hippies that I don't like.

I think it's not that bad: 1 child in 150 has a form of autism according to what I read on this site.

Thank you... I was going to write something similar myself.
The opening argument was about the term PC.
The history of the term is in the quote above.
You can bash Apple all you want... but they did not coin the term "PC".
It means what it meant years ago... it was NEVER applied to Apple products as far as I know... it has always been used to describe machines that operate on Bill Gates' software.
The rest of the name-calling and petty comments (
The reality is ... there is no "better computer" in relation to global usage encompassing all possible types of measurement.
Macs are 'best' for some people and not for others.
Windows machines are 'best' for some people and not for others.
Linux machines are 'best' for some people and not for others.
It's silly but sad to see people continually waste their time arguing about all this and carrying on with the name-calling.
No matter which computer OS/Company is your favorite, having you wag your finger in someone's face and decry their computer is the EXACT SAME THING as them wagging their finger in your face and decrying yours.
All of you are computer snobs... so just live with it.
I know... I DRIVE A PRIUS! and it's NOT A CAR! IT'S A PRIUS! so THERE!

LIBRARIES... Hardware stores for the mind
I'd probably never use a Mac myself due to the limitations they have compared to PCs, but I recommend Macs to pretty much most people out there who can afford it and don't use their computers for gaming, and don't upgrade their hardware a lot. They are much easier to use, as long as you haven't used nothing but a Windows setup for years.

Whereas Macs were designed for stupid people in the first place.
Yeah, sorry about putting forward the argument you'd started the topic off with - must have been tired
