Well widescreens are definitely good for portables, would you like to see 1280x1024 in a laptop or 1440x900? It'd look way too tall in my opinion..
Regardless I don't see the issue with widescreens, I use one with a native resolution of 2560x1600, more than big and nice enough for me.

I'd rather see 1280x1024 to be honest... although my laptop gets 1400x1050 so it's still better than 1440x900...

That resolution I would gladly take... if I could afford a monitor that displayed that...
