I love the sound of listening to cw on air, the qrnancy, qrmary. Its the sound of my childhood. No money, no encouragement, tho with the help of the nephew of a woman down the street I got somewhere.

In my experience you have to listen to it as 'music'.

Give me a mobile phone that can do morse instead if pre-emptive texting.

I did consider creating an operating system takes input/output in pure morse[/quote]

The I/O at the most basic level is binary 1s and 0s.
same as dots & dashes

Nice to hear from you. What the uninitiated do not realise is the on air 'multi-channel' capability of cw. They probably have never spent much time listening on the short waves. Then as we know, five signals very close in frequency are still easily resolved as well as all the other stuff coming through. The other major point is apart from simplicity of equipment (ie easily homebrewed) is that two good operators can get thro a lot of text quickly using established abbreviations. etc...

I think the interest on my part ties in with radio propogation and the often chance nature / unpredictability. 73

I learned Morse code as a kid just for the fun of it (an Aspie interest for a while) but have forgotten it now. Use it or lose it. :(

I tried off and on for years to try and learn morse code, finally did in college, once my sister had moved out of the house and quit harassing me every time I wanted to do my own thing. I learned it for my ham license since it was required back then(1988). I passed a 5WPM and a 13WPM morse test, and used it on the air alot. I like the mode, but it isn't my favorite. I could never make it to 20wpm though.

These days, I spend alot of time working digital modes, mostly PSK31 and I tried Olivia after seeing an article in QST magazine this month. I prefer doing that over CW, but I can work slow to mid speed CW if I need to.

I LOVE CW... learned it in the 70's when I got my Ham license. It was fun from the beginning, but I really fell in love the day I realized that I could stop writing it down and just sit back and listen to it, hearing whole words. My speed increased to about 55 words per minute in on-air conversations.

I am currently licensed as AF3S, but have been inactive for almost 20 years, due both to a lack of money and a lack of a place to string antennae. I was active in CW traffic nets in Fort Lauderdale for quite a while, and ran the slow-speed net. I also set up the first license test program in the area when the ARRL changed the procedures to allow clubs and individuals to administer the tests, turning it over to an active club in the area after a while.

The suggestion that you listen to ARRL broadcasts is a good one. You don't even need to have a radio to do it... you can listen to their code practice online anytime here: http://www.arrl.org/w1aw/morse.html

Good luck... CW is fun!

my fingers don't move that fast...;) I seem to remember the US Coast Guard retired Morse Code about 2000 (from a radio story on NPR)

I know that Edison was sending 4 different messages on a single wire in the last 1800s

I have tried to learn morse several times in my youth, but I could never get the hang of it. I wish that I could do morse.

I wonder if the non verbal auties would be able to translate their thoughts into words which could then come out as CW using either a straight key or a more modern key. I know that in the old days that many people could send/understand 24 to 30 words a minute.

Here it would be

Thoughts in head --> Words --> morse

Rather than

Thoughts in head --> words --> speaking
