You've got a point there.

I have an old Powerbook G3 "Lombard" myself and I find it quite attractive despite it's age. I'm running Debian on it.

I've only had PC's, but I voted Mac. If I get the money for it, my next computer is going to be a Mac. Macs are more expensive, but I think you get what you pay for in the design of the hardware and operating system. Windows is only better for video games, and I don't play video games.

Linux offers pretty good gaming performance nowadays. I've played Doom 3 with Linux a few years ago and it was working really good, despite that I didn't have the best computer hardware for it.

In general, Linux is stable as a rock and watching high definition video works good too. It worked even better than with Windows XP the last time I tried it. I don't know why either, but I have a few theories.

Try linux for free. Get a 2 or 4 gig thumb drive, clean it off and download the ubuntu iso Here.

Then download unetbootin for windows and run it. point it at the iso you downloaded and have the thumb drive in your usb. select that as destination and let it install ubuntu on the thumb drive.

Restart your computer, press F8 key repeatedly until you get a list of drives to boot from. Select the USB and press enter and it should boot you into ubuntu. No permanent changes will be made to your computer.

You can do that with any variant of linux, and theoretically even windows(but you'd need a larger thumb drive)

Now you have an operating system that fits in your pocket. You can plug it into any computers USB and it should work.

I vote mac because if you do get the new router with built in harddrive you can save important stuff, and that they are user friendly

Get a nice, but inexpensive PC running Windows and swap between being a Windows PC and a Hackantosh

@suphaneko: hackintosh is a bad idea. Not only is it illegal, it's next to impossible if you're not a computer guru.

Still haven't gotten around to putting XP on my Macbook. Planning to real soon now, though. I really want that full stable of OS's. Maybe I'll even add BSD and Solaris!

Anyways, if you want to use FinalCut, then go for the Mac. If you get 4GB RAM you can easily run Windows in a virtualbox and still have the Windows OS if OSX turns out not to be to your liking.

The only reason I haven't tried it yet...

Macs are getting quite slick now. Most people don't like Mac OS and so don't get it but you can always get bootcamp (latest version of Mac OS comes with it) and whack Windows on it. I don't really mind although I would like to get an iMac.

I presume "Other" is probably Linux, but I think it would be more accurate to presume a PPC and IA64x86 version could be more accurate (Intel 64bit only until Intel decided to adopt AMD's 64bit ways)

Regarding gaming on linux: Last night I successfully installed spore(which came out on sept 7, 2008). Apparently it runs, but brothers laptop graphics are not sufficient. I will try a different machine tonight.

Really? I made my gnome linux desktop look just like it.

But only until I fooled my OSX-loving friend into believing that I bought a mac.

It really is surprisingly bad, for a system known primarily for user-friendliness.
