IIRC, the Dvorak keyboard layout offered the user a 35% +/- speed and/or accuracy improvement over the QWERTY layout.
a bit of trivia; know why the QWERTY layout is laid out like that? So salesmen could easily type out "typewriter" to clients in demos.
