I feel slightly better knowing that I wasn't the only one watching it I did defrag all 3 of my partitions

who defrags their computer? honestly. hard drive speed is not going to make your computer and faster it's all about the cpu and vid card

I have nothing else to do with my time. I end up defragging my OS X drive.

whatever floats your boat, some peoples hobbies are painting/stamp collecting/etc, other are defraging their hard drives

Let's say it takes 2 seconds longer to load a 5mb file into RAM on a fragmented hard drive, & your system has to load 30 5mb files in the hour. That's a minute of your time wasted because yourr crappy windows machine has a crappy fragmenting file system.

EDIT: Also from my experience CPU & video chipset power means very little; it's all about the software you run. I can get Spore running at fullspeed on just fine on an old 2.2GHz P4 (non-HT) & an Intel 945gm integrated chipset. Of course this is after stripping un-neccisary services & keeping all background programs to a minimum.

when you are running a game cpu and vid card are going to give you more frames a second, any other task like web browsing happens in seconds anyways who cares?

SSD dont need to be defraged and they will replace HDD soon so youll need to find a new hobby. im sure somebody could make a defraging simulator then you could defrag your computer for pretend

Back when I still played WoW I was getting a framerate faster than the human visual cycle could keep up. & I don't know about you but my web browsers take a third of a second to start up & the same amount of time to pull a page, assuming the server on the other side is decent.

Now with NTFS you don't really want everything at the very begging of the drive. You want to keep things spread out but not in a bunch of little pieces but together and without a bunch of small amounts of free space scattered throughout the drive but rather large chunks of it. That way if you are working on some files and add more to them it won't always get fragmented like it will in FAT filing systems. Then if you decide to copy a large file to it one day it will know it and leave free space between that and your other data so it can still be changed without fragmenting as much. For it to work with the best performance it is best to have at least 15% free space available on the drive for it to work with. Also contrary to some peoples beliefs, even though NTFS is more efficient and doesn't fragment as easily it still does need to be defragmented from time to time. Check it and see if Windows recommends it be defragmented every once in a while or after you make lots of changes to your system. It also saves a mirror of the Master File Table in about the center of the drive for backup but I don't believe it back up the volume bitmap which is the file that saves the locations of the other files relative to their actual locations on the hard disk platters and knows what files are fragmented and where all of their fragments are located.

i play wow today and have a high end system and when i set my settings to max and go to dalaran i get >5 FPS. also wow is a cpu limited game your vid card will only contribute 5 FPS max to wow.

On my intel-chipset laptop I've never had a framerate that low ever (except for that one time I was running WoW under Wine in linux but that doesn't count.)

Have you tried killing all background apps on your taskbar?

yea i use ccleaner and i disabled all startup programs i'm running a sqeaky clean vista build. even a corei7 EE with a geforce 4850pro cant get more than 10 FPS on max settings in Dalaran

Oh wait, vista! I too experienced a significant speed decrease in vista! I was always too lazy to find out why, I just knew I was getting at least 30fps on XP Pro yet nearly half that on vista. Clearing up all those crappy services didn't do much help, but did help nonetheless...have you disabled all you can/want to in services.msc?
