You can, and it's not exceptionally difficult. The lack of a CD drive on netbooks complicates things though. You might want to follow Lau's suggestion and borrow someone else's computer for the purpose of making a bootable usb drive.

Did I not say? That was how I got Ubuntu onto my Acer Aspire One (the 512MiB RAM / 4Gib SSD model).

When I used Ubuntu to produce the bootable USB stick, it was even nice enough to preserve everything I already had on the 8GiB stick that I happened to use. (It doesn't NEED 8GiB.... it was just that I had that handy.)

Can't I just go to the website and download it? Or it is important to have a solid copy?

You can, but the downloads from the websites are CD images, which could be difficult to make use of without a CD drive.

I actually already have a virtual drive program, can I use that to mount the images

OK. So how is this for a sequence:

==============

Download VirtualBox and install that under XP.

Download an Intrepid Ibex (Ubuntu) CD.

Use that iso image to install a virtualised Ubuntu under VirtualBox.

Play with a virtual Ubuntu, to get the feel of it.

===============

Allow that virtual Ubuntu direct access to USB.

Use the virtual Ubuntu, plus it's own ISO image, to produce a bootable memory stick.

Reboot from the memory stick.

Play with a non-virtual Ubuntu, but running live from the stick.

===============

Install a dual boot system, from the stick.

Play with the real, full, installed Ubuntu.

==============

Leave deleting XP until you figure that you don't care for it any more.

Rafter, here is a website that tells you how to put ubuntu onto a flash drive and boot from flash drive, if you not have a cd drive.

I don't dual boot, but I've kept a spare laptop running XP.

The one I've converted to Linux was running Vista anyway, so it was close to useless before. But Linux is fantastic - if it wasn't for the gaming thing which stems completely from Bill's dedication to owning the planet, I'd be permanently content.

Now I have a Nokia E71, whose development environments only run on Windows at the moment, so I'm glad to have the windows backup. Nokia have released the QT development environment under the LGPL now, so the writing's on the wall.
