internet explorer crashing?
Linux is free to download off the Internet. http://www.ubuntu.com/
If you're really paranoid about security, BSD is also free and probably the most secure OS out there. OpenBSD, from what I've head, has a very intense focus on security.

Don't be so cocky. Macs can get viruses too, and Safari may be better than IE (well, basically every browser in the world is better than IE) but it has its security vulnerabilities as well.
What about Internet Explorer 8

1. Back up all important data onto an external HD.
2. Obtain (if you don't already have it) copies of antivirus and antispyware programs on CDs. If you're using programs you downloaded from the internet, save them on a thumb drive or something so you can have them ready to install without having to get on the Internet to download them again.
3. Wipe your computer's HD and re-install Windows. Make sure that it's not hooked up to the internet at all.
4. Before connecting your computer to the internet, install the anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. I have Symantec anti-virus and Spybot Search and Destroy. They seem to work pretty well. If you're really paranoid, get something like ZoneAlarm firewall as well.
5. Now that you have security software installed, it is safer (not safe, but safer than with no protection) to get on the Internet. In Internet Explorer, there is only one site you should visit: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/ Get Firefox, use it for all your web browsing. If you find you don't like it much, then use it to download other browsers like Opera, Safari, Seamonkey, or Chrome.
6. Delete Internet Explorer, or at least eliminate all icons for it from your quick-launch bar, desktop, and menus. Yes, I am serious. I went out of my way to make IE completely inaccessible when I installed Vista. Running it is like having a giant "data-mine me" sign on your computer.
7. Be sure to turn off all the gaping security holes such as file-sharing.
8. If you want a more secure system, switch to an open-source *nix system like Linux (Ubuntu is n00b-friendly) or BSD. You can still run all your Windows programs under Virtualbox and/or Wine if you want to. The main thing you'll lose is gaming. If you want to stick with Windows, fine, but know that it is much more of a challenge to keep Windows secure than it is to find the correct wireless driver in Linux.
Hey Orwell, didn't I tell you about Zonealarm.

Why does everyone suggest linux. I run Ubuntu on one of my computers and it is still not too much different than Windows XP Pro with Symantec Antivirus Endpoint, Spybot, SuperAS & Zonealarm. There is no performance enhancement or anything. Don't give me that s**t about Linux needing less work to run correctly. Also half the good Open-Source software is for Windows too. Also most hardware won't work in linux. Like my mothers HP Laptop thats 4 years old or any computer with broadcom wireless.
I still have to work to get several programs running in ubuntu so its not worth it.
V0LUME buddy, stick with Windows like the rest of america and you'll be good.

Two answers
1. Firefox - I never use IE
2. The rest of the family insist upon using XP, my best new freind is AVAST anti virus - its free and cleared up a load of issues on the MS computers http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
3. If you insist on using Windows consider having a dual boot system with a linux distro. Use linux when your on the internet. You can save files directly to the windows section of your hard drive from linux (not the other way around) the benefit being that when you boot into windows you can scan the files before opening them, and malware that tries to install during the download wont be able to.

A lot of people like it; it's a pretty nice OS. Especially on the security front- you can't deny Linux has much better security than Windows, whichever one you prefer.
Ubuntu is one of the most bloated Linux distros out there, but even it can be made much faster than XP could even dream of. Try IceWM or, faster still, Fluxbox instead of GNOME/KDE and you'll see some disgustingly fast performance. Something like Arch, Slackware, Gentoo, etc would be much faster still, but also would require some actual knowledge of how Linux works.
It does for me. Your mileage may vary. I've never gotten terribly familiar with Windows, so that may be why I'm not very good at trouble-shooting it. Still, familiarity is not the same thing as user-friendliness, and I wish Windows advocates would stop pretending it is.
This is true. The open-source movement does not hog all their goodies to themselves, and they are more than willing to share with anyone who wants some.
Most hardware does work in Linux; I've had more hardware compatibility issues in Vista personally. Broadcom is one of the big culprits of stuff not working in Linux, but I believe the newest Ubuntu release (8.10) has solved that issue by allowing proprietary drivers. At least, it works out-of-the-box for my Broadcom wireless.
I guess we just use different programs, because I haven't had trouble getting anything I need to run in Ubuntu. To each his own, I suppose. I only said that Linux (or BSD, let's not forget about them) would be a good option if the OP was paranoid about security. If v0lume likes Windows and wants to continue using it, that's fine too. But he should know it's more work to keep Windows secure. Windows is the slowest and least secure OS on the market today. But it's also the most widely used, and therefore the most developed-for. Pick your poison.
