I have a bunch of aliases in my dotfiles for this sort of thing

and a script that will auto add it if I forgot it for certain commands

I just type
Code:
sudo bash
- once.

I personally like the ability to run a command with or without superuser privileges as needed, using only as powerful of privileges as I need rather than logging in as root and then exiting later when I want to execute a command but not be root anymore. Of course, if I need to be root for a prolonged period of time, sudo su is always there.

You need to put a # in front of the deb cdrom part like below

I put the # but I don't know how to actually initiate that change. Nothing changed when I merely did that then quit. I'm an Ubuntu n00b, so I don't know how to use terminal.

and restart whatever package management tool your are using and/or tell it to refresh the repository data and have a wired Ethernet connection (as the whole point of this is that you haven't got to WiFi working yet).

I imagine it would, but you don't have to type sudo every couple of seconds :).
Post install I do, er, did. Too much stuff to do to bother with sudo fdhrfjkdshfsdkj for every command.

I end to open up a few terminal emulators w/ root/whatever user if I need to do anything beyond a few lines.

Sounds like a personal problem  I don't have to type sudo hngkjgkjhgk for every command. I must be special :D

In reality, I usually do Ctrl/Alt/F1 and login as root.

Okay, once I saved the newly-commented script the terminal showed up blank and the software manager could no loner even upload the upgrades from the folders.

what do you mean it showed up blank? You weren't supposed to erase anything.

I didn't. When I next opened up terminal, there was an error message and the terminal opened up blank.

If you gave us some details like the output of lspci and the model of your netbook we could give more useful advice.
