You mean Bochs?
That would be a lot slower than VirtualBox/VMware.

I think if you must run Windows 9x, any of these would be faster:
1. VMware - you could use the trial version of Workstation to build the VM and run it under Player afterwards (no 3D acceleration though)
2. VirtualPC
3. VirtualBox using VBE display driver

I would advice against using Virtual PC and to go with VMWare server instead (then get Workstation if you realyl need it).

Reason being that the Snapshot/revert function in VMWare alone saves lots of time when trying to recover from a crash/bad installation. For Virtual PC, you have to manually back up the image files, there is no "undo feature" like the snapshot/revert in VMWare.

Not to be picky but VirtualPC should support undo too. I haven't used the latest version so Microsoft could have downgraded the feature set. Still in the versions that I've used, there's a 1 level undo. You could also combine it with differential disk image to add another level but that would require some manual work.

VirtualBox supports linear snapshots (not sure if there's an absolute limit) and VMware even supports tree-like snapshots that allows branches.

And yes VMware Server is also a good choice and it's free too. I can't imagine I've forgetten it.

I begged a differ. Just install VMWare tools in the Main Toolbar and open My Computer and Click on the CD-DRIVE. Should get all Win9X drivers!! !

I've used it mainly to Emulate Ubuntu, Vista, Server 2008 as well as 2003 from XP Pro. Works Great you just have to know how to install hardware drivers as well as research incompatibility issues with the OS before you install.

I do have to warn you!! ! You are better off in Vmware than Wine!! At least you are working in a athentic windows platform compatible with almost everything out there. You also are not risking getting half-@$$ results out of the windows programs you are using!!

How is audio/video? VirtualBox is great for most stuff, but audio/video (video alone is fine) is laggy on my 2ghz Sempron and I've read VMWare was better for audio/video, and a second opinion would be great.

With accelerated drivers installed, AV in VMware is faster.
