You will eventually die anyway. But I wouldn't worry about that, or about a volcano blowing up in your face, and covering a large extent of the northern hemisphere.

It sounds brutal, yes, but there are more things in life to focus on than things like that.

But you live in Elk Grove which is west of the Sierra's so you honestly have no cause to worry about being killed by Yellowstone erupting.


As for you androo4salez: I surely hope that if you're around when the eruption warning signs start to show you pack your bags and go west to the Pacific coast somewhere.

A simple question: Even if we would know that the Yellowstone would erupt likely in x months/weeks, what could we really do about it? There is no technology available to control a small volcano, how we could do this with such a monster?

There is a long list of volcano sleeping. Even for the very most Germans unknown in the very west of Germany is an active volcanic region in the Eifel. The most recent eruption 8000 years ago was about 250 times stronger than Mount St. Helens in 1980. The difference to Mount St. Helens is that this region is highly populated and such an eruption would have direct consequences for Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, France and whole of Luxembourg - more than 15 Mio. people in this region ...

An other "candidate" is Vesuvius.

The list of potential bad guys is longer.

Especially thinks we can do something about.

The consequences of such an eruption would be so severe that we really couldn't do anything. Therefore it does not make any sense to be worried about. The reasonable thing to do is to ignore issues you can't influence.

We could prepare by evacuating everyone within a 600 mile radius as well as distributing gas masks and survival gear to those in the areas most likely to suffer heavy ash fallout and gasification. It would be VERY WISE for folks in the surrounding states to construct underground bunkers/fallout shelters as was done during the cold war.

That, plus the key thing would be for the government coming up with a simple/cheap way to allow for all rescue/military vehicles to continuously run without their engines being destroyed by the ash (owners of electric cars shall be kings/queens, or just rapidly car-jacked). I'm actually planning on getting a vehicle to set up for such a situation or anything similar with an ARB brush guard bumper with winch, along with their filtered snorkel for the ash (probably on a Land Rover Discovery 2 or 3).

I'd say ones best bet is to used electrically powered vehicles. Ash is much denser then air and by 2 or 3 weeks most of it will have settled and blown onward. So those in the fallout zone should hunker down in their underground shelters and wait until the ash settles and the skies clearl up a bit.
