I wish web developers would stop trying to employ the latest and greatest flash and smoke just because someone makes something new for the web.

Those of us with no affordable alternative to dial-up really don't appreciate the way it grinds web surfing to a stand still.

Windows 7 emulates a Windows XP SP2 virtual machine for 32 bit applications, that is why the compatibility and stability is better than Windows Vista.

Only with the more expensive editions, and the emulated environment doesn't support 3D. So, it's useless for old games.

I would suggest you switch to linux. 98 is ancient now 12 years old 8O
You can use Xubuntu and that can run on a Pentium 3 only needs 128 MB ram. Great OS

i am sure it is a great OS [IOW, it's bound to be better than anything gates and company put out] but my problem is that i would have to find replacement programs [mainly audio DSP/wave editing] and i am not positive that many of the ones i use are written for linux. and the replacement programs in themselves would cost me many $$$$ at present prices. but thank you for your suggestion, DT :)

In 5 years or so, I'd be amazed if a 32-bit OS would be needed for anything.

i'm afraid you all are way ahead of me in every technological respect. god-willing, i will still have to use my 98SE machine in the foreseable future, unless somebody figures out a way to upgrade an existing 98SE machine to run on the newer OS. i simply cannot "start over from the beginning" in getting a fresh W7 puter.

As a web designer and developer I can say with some degree of authority that most developers don't care much for Flash. It's the hardcore designers and web animators (if a company has to means to hire them) that are to blame for your woes. As someone who crosses into both disciplines I have a pragmatic view of Flash. If a project warrants it then I'll use it as a tool to communicate, but I will never employ it simply because "it's there and it'll be cool!" That's the wrong view of Flash.

Here's a little factoid you should know about Flash sites: 95% of them are designed to be portfolio pieces for the person or studio who made it. It's an endless cycle of "look at this gaudy monstrosity we've made! Now hire us for your project and we'll make another gaudy monstrosity to clutter up the web!"

I'm also going to go out on a limb and say there's a huge shift in the web away from gaudy sites to more practical, minimalistic looking sites. Some people call the design "web 2.0" I call it "social friendly."

I would like to ask this: Why Windows anything?

Are you even aware of the existence of:
Linux?
FreeBSD?
Solaris?
eComStation?
AmigaOS?
Mac OS X?

I used Apple's Snow Leopard and Ubuntu. I'm very satisfied, go with Apple. It's worth it in the long run.

I've been a Flash 'animator' myself, and only used it in practical ways. I worked for a press agency and provided animations that could fit into any of the associated news sites. These days, I just block scripting language on EVERY site (unless I permit them) as it's become as much of an annoyance as the <blink> tag in the early days of HTML.

Do I see a reason to ditch Windows? Not yet. Would I like to see more open standards? YES!

@ the OP - is winders 7 worth it? yes, but only if you get it from pirate bay

I have it installed, it is certainly a massive improvement on Vista, but that does not mean it is good. I am a convert from Ubuntu to Mint, which I think is a good hybrid of the Linux and Winders interfaces. Mind you if Gnome 3 and its Shell keeps to its current look and feel it will be time to find a new kernel or OS. Which may mean loading WInders up with anti-ware and putting up with that until the gnome mess is sorted.

I would recommend Linux/GNU.
Best OS. My personal favorite distro is Debian or Xubuntu.
Vista is not really that good.
It's going to be forgotten and left behind like Windows ME.

Would recommend selling your computer and getting a new one or upgrading it to Windows 7 or converting to Linux.

The best OS from Microsoft is probably XP 64 Bit with custom add-ons. Such as Google Desktop and Custom Taskbars.

Right, and directx 11, and native windows program support, right? Also why buy another new computer when my 1st post explicitly mentions that it is a brand new computer?

You can dual boot.

I didn't like Windows after Windows 95. XP was good though.
