Windows 7 is really very much vista as Jookia said and the system functionality also but appearance wise certainly turned over a new leaf and apparently you could 7 on alot of older computers aswell? Personally, Windows 7 would actually function just well, the matter really is that you would then need to get updated drivers in order to run Windows 7 smoothly.
Ubuntu is also very good and the best system that I use and it's free, I don't get hell out of it and I think using ubuntu is really good, and best of all, it doesn't seem to slow down your system. (Well it doesn't on mine).
