I was under the impression it might have been full of losers who wish they were hackers but more spend their time just trying to troll people. But I can't say I ever looked much into it.

Public perception of 4chan often stems from the /b/ subsection, which definitely is full of losers who think they are hackers because they can use DDoS tools.

There are other subsections in which actual stimulating conversation can occur, though of course the trolling aspect is always there.

Yeah sounds about right, the only time I was ever on that site though was because my brother wanted to show me funny pictures on it, but I don't think it was the /b/ sub-section. There were some associated with the /b/ sub-section or whatever when myspace had forums on there, the fake hacker types that just screw up peoples posts and stupid crap like that so that is how I ended up finding out about that.

Yes. That isn't an accusation we like to see thrown around on WP, thanks.
If you have actual concerns then you should contact a moderator about them.

Not guilty here. Nor on 4chan. Your problems sound like ad ware, tracking cookies, which come with a new computer. All of those free things, they want to know what someone with a new computer is doing.

They are made in China, and used for business, so trust the Red Army if you want. US troops are not allowed to use flash drives, because they are made in China, and call home, for marketing study.

Also internet service providers, bad service.

Windows 7? The defective prototype of 8. If Vista, that is the problem. Vista hates people, all of them.

If it came with a pre installed but not active anti virus, it will mess with other anti virus, and they are hard to uninstall. Norton 360 takes downloading an uninstall program from Norton, until you become tired and just go with Norton.

People run ads, other people track ads, then track ad viewers, Since all tracking cookies work the same, they fight for resources, and jam up the works. A key event, they all try to call home at once.

The Chinese are waiting for you to contact anyone, since everyone knows people, till they have a cookie in a machine that the owner works for NATO, an arms supplier, Government, where an email to a coworker becomes an open door.

Speaking of government, everyone who goes to 4chan is being watched by the FBI. Also, everyone who does not go to 4chan.

Now that the Kissing Bug zombie virus is loose, we have bigger things to do.

Check /b/ there might be some answers soon.

Love how hacking/cracking and the like are depicted in movies. I like to have friends over and watch them. We take a drink every time they do something that is patently impossible.

We couldn't make it all the way through Live Free or Die Hard

I wonder if the scriptwriters who churn out some of this stuff have to hire someone else just to boot their computers up for them... At least, they don't seem to have the slightest idea how a computer works. Although if it comes to that, any time a movie or TV show touches on any subject I know much about, it makes me LMAO. I suspect they're just as confused when it comes to things I don't know much about.

I mean, I've read books where the writer obviously didn't know what they were talking about, but at least some authors do try to get things right. Movies? TV? I admit, I don't watch much (try to guess why :P ) but I can't think of anything I've seen where the writers seemed to have a clue about anything. Look at the clip in the post we're talking about; the writer must have run across a glossary of computer terms or something, and just tossed a few terms in at random, like a monkey at a typewriter. :wall:

It's impossible for someone to hack somebody through this website - they would have to go through the WP server first. The WP server is more secure than government systems. We even have chip smashers that will smash the chips if someone tries to hack it.

I don't think there's a Turing machine for that question. =/

Watch The Matrix: Reloaded. You might want to chase it down with some other movie if you don't want a dry night though. :3

I really hope that particular statement was put there on purpose, to show the actors have no clue what they're talking about. I mean, it's practically solid gold ignorance. If not, though... I don't even want to imagine that kind of world.

It's not a question - the chip smashers will save us.

Sadly, I don't have to imagine it. I live in that world... (I know of professionals with Masters degrees who not only do not know how to Cut and Paste, they complained it was too complicated when I tried explaining it to them. I could go on, but I try not to remember these incidents.) I must add, I see that you live in Denmark. If things are that different there, that's almost enough to tempt me to consider moving to Denmark. The only problem is, I'm a writer, and my first and most enduring obsession is the English language. (I literally became obsessed with figuring out how to read at age two.) So I guess I'll have to go on trying to ignore the pure, unadulterated ignorance that surrounds me. :wall:

No, there are a few things that make your worry rather unlikely:

  • The computer cracker would need a vector of attack.
  • The "hacktivists" at Anonymous would have to actually possess some motivation to come here.

Either a cracker would have to send you an e-mail or PM, getting you to click a link to an unsavory website, or they'd have to get your IP address, and that would be stored on the Wrong Planet web server. Then people from Anonymous would have to actually want to spend time on Wrong Planet; obviously this isn't a target for "hacktivism," which only leaves "doing it for the lulz." This would usually not involve cracking into someone's computer and placing malware.
