I will never use a "mobile computer" over a desktop one. Certainly not for gaming.

I despair for gaming if that's the way it's headed, and it looks as though it is. All the original virtues of the desktop are being derided by stockholders and spreadsheet cell values.

Windows 8 looks to me like Microsoft's Vietnam.

I think you should settle down. Nobody is making people buy these things. I certainly wouldn't try to use a laptop on a crowded subway.

I wasn't particularly unsettled....

Ok. I was afraid you were gonna start breaking stuff.

I've been using the release preview of Windows 8 for the past month and I like it. I've also used Linux for the past month as well but I prefer Windows because I have a lot of software (games) that won't run on Linux under Wine.

As for the start screen, I don't even use the start screen as I installed a program that immediately exits the start screen and goes right into the desktop environment and it also includes the start button.

Initially I did not like Windows 8 but I got used to it and know my way around it now.

You're referring to Start8. Which basically makes Windows 8 into Windows 7 Minus.

Oh, ok.

Start8 duplicates the Win7 start menu down to every possible detail. It is commercial software though.

You can also use ViStart. It's free software but it requires .NET Framework 3.5. It looks like Win7 startmenu. Sometimes, it can crash (a small error when Windows is shutting down).
If you want to try ViStart, when installing, don't accept extras (it's adware).

With startmenu and another theme (default theme in RTM is ugly, you can use RP theme in RTM if you want), Windows 8 is not bad: it's stable and has good performances (quick at boot,...).

ViStart has a few issues and doesn't prevent the Metro start screen from showing up like Start8 does, which is crucial. I also don't think its duplication of the Windows 7 start menu is as perfect as Start8.

Start8 supposedly also lets you use the Metro start screen in the shape of a start menu, which may be what some want.
