yes pizzas are circles and you may like to waste time on pi r square i. But you're at a pizza parlor with your friends and dont have time for that.
So - you might as well be practical and just pretend for a moment that pizzas are square- and then -you square their linear dimension. And you get the same correct RATIO between the areas of the types of pizza-even though it will not be thier actual areas in square inches. That inturn yields the same correct ratio in the pennies per square inch price of each size-which will correctly tell you which is the better buy.
Youll get same right answer for which size and price is the better buy regardless of whether you treat them as squares or as circles.

the answer is simply one to two.
a plot of land that is one hundred square feet is half the area of a plot of land that is 200 square feet. there can be no simpler assessment than that.
but that means you will calculate the price per square inch based upon an inaccurate calculation of the true area in the field of your consideration, and you can not report accurate figures derived from your "investigation" because your estimate of the true square area is wrong, and your field of consideration is short sighted and i withdraw from this discussion.

A square that is 'one hundred foot square' is not the same thing as a square that is "one hundred square feet".
A square that is "one hundred square feet" has an area of ...100 square feet.
So...each of its sides would be...only ten feet.
A square that is a "100 foot square" is a square that is 100 feet long on each of its sides.
Which would mean that its AREA is 100 squared. Or, 10 thousand square feet (almost a quarter acre).
So... Compare that "100 foot square" to a "200 foot square".
The two hundred foot square is twice as long on each of its sides- but its area is 200x200 (compare to 100x100). Or 40 thousand square feet (virtually a whole acre).
Not twice, but FOUR times the AREA of the 100 foot square.
The point is simple: when you double the linear dimension- you quadruple the area.

Lessay that these parcels of land were not square, but two big circles.
So our first plot is not a 100 foot square, but a circle with a 100 foot diameter.
Then its area would be-not 10 thousand- but only around 7500 square feet.
The second plot would be a circle with a diameter of 200- meaning it has an area of around (not 40 thousand) but about 30 thousand square feet.
The ratio of 30K to 7.5K is...what?
Four to one.
Exactly the same as the ratio in size between the sizes of the two squares.
So you can ignore the shape of the pizzas and just pretend that they are squares instead of circles (which makes it WAY simpler to do the math) to determine which size is the better value (which is all that I would be interested in).
That was my point- as opposed to what the other poster said.
The other guy said "I would just divide by the inches and be done with it".
But that would be the equivalent of buying a 100 foot wide square of land for half of the total price of an adjacent 200 foot wide square of land -and thinking that your getting a fair deal.
If you went for that real estate deal you would be getting ripped off because you would be paying a half the money- but getting only one fourth as much land(even though the linear dimensions are half)- so per square foot youd be paying twice as much!

well i do not know why that convention is tolerated. when i say "x square feet", then it should be presumed that the perimeter of the square i am talking about is the square root of the number i say *4.
it matters very much to me how you phrase your questions. very much does not mean infinitely much.
if a "pizza" is the answer to a day long consideration of what i will have for dinner, and if at the time i am supposed to buy the pizza, i no longer feel like pizza, then what do i do?
you are a level above me, tequila, but i do not fear your rapier wit. i know you are not a nasty person. so what does one do when one craves a particular pizza all day, and when it comes time to order it, one's appetite has faded to the point where the idealized pizza is not required?
i think it is not a very important question and i would never ask some person on the street what the answer is.

Thats what everyone means when they say "an X square foot square".
But thats not the issue.
The issue is NOT the meaning of the phrase "X square feet", its the meaning of the phrase "X foot square".
When you talk about "x square feet" you're on the same page as everyone else.
Its when everyone else talks about "X Foot Squares" that you get confused as to what the rest of us are talking about.
A square that is "100 square feet" is indeed a square in which each side is the square root of a 100( ie ten)- as you described ( ie has a perimeter of 40).
But a square that is a "100 foot square" is something else.
Lets just put it this way: your "100 square foot square" would be...." the same thing as a "TEN foot square".

Well... the bottom line is that its more complicated than " price divided by the inches"- but not MUCH more complicated than that!
With subs- it is indeed 'inches divided by price".
With pizzas it "inches SQUARED, divided by price".
That is the central concept.
With subs one dimension is all that you need to calculate value, but with pizzas (like real estate) you have think in two dimensions).
