IE or Firefox and why...
Firefox because:
1: I'm using linux and it's preinstalled.
2: It has tabs.
3: IE has almost no advantage over firefox, except being able to access a few webpages with microsoft's code. I have no reason to install it.
4: I can have several hundred tabs open taking up 1.5GB of memory and it still won't crash. It usually crashes once it uses all memory and 1.5GB of swap space though. Firefox usually crashes from having too much cpu usage from animations or myspace code, and sometimes from websites with streaming video. IE crashes sometimes with only a few windows open. Because of the lack of tabs, I've never had more than a few dozen windows open in IE so I don't know about how stable it would be with several hundred windows open.
Recently I've been using konqueror the most since It doesn't slow my processor with several hundred advertisement animations running. I don't have enable/disable stuff all of the time. I mostly use firefox for videos now.
My machine can't handle opera, unfortunately
get a new machine then!! ! DUH!! ! it probally is a pentium, or a Pentium 2

I use IE7 because it does everything I need and when I used Firefox it was great but some sites don't work in it (I know that is mroe the problem of the site than Firefox) but it's just easier only to have 1 browser installed. I don't like to clog up my computer with unecessary applications.
If it weren't that I use SeaMonkey, because I like all my Mozilla bits in one package, I would use Firefox. There's really no point in any comparison with IE7, which is a poor attempt by MS to put tabs onto IE6.
I can't live without things like "Adblock Plus" and "Web Developer". "Mnenhy" is good too. There are a few other extensions I've used in the past, which I seem to currently be doing without. If I need them, I know they're just a few clicks away.

I use Opera.
* Standards compliant
* Free (Right now I don't care that's it's not open source)
* Mouse gestures. When I had gotten used to mouse gestures, and used IE at a library, I was just annoyed that the context menu appeared when I tried to go back. (;
* The speed
* Tabs
* The fact that tabs are implemented with a heap priority rather than a ring priority. (In simple terms, tabbing happens in the order you used the tabs, not in the order they appear on the screen)
* I like the way Opera caches pages. Never does it happen that I go back and see the form data I've filled in vanished.
* The trashcan. Any page that has been closed can be easily re-opened.
* The fact that your session is saved when you quit, even if the program crashes.
* The GUI can be customized more easy than in FF or IE (You can place tabs or buttons on all for sides of the window for example)
* Widgets. Although my slow computer is too slow to handleOpera's widgets, I think they look and work nice.
* Zoom. Pages can be zoomed, which is an actual zoom rather than a change in text size.
* You can set individual options for sites when it comes to style sheets, script rules, cookies etc.
* The great download manager.
* Bittorrent. Although I prefer µTorrent for that, I think it's a brave idea to include BT in a web browser.
* Wand, the password manager, which also supports encryption. (I don't like storing passwords in plain text)
I'm starting to lose count. I know for sure that I've forgotten things.
The only reason to use FF (Except if a page doesn't work in Opera, although rare) is Firebug and the DOM inspector. But the good news is that Opera AS (Ironically, that's how you denote a company in Norway) are working on developer tools.
Hi nitro2k01. I don't think I noticed anything on your list that FF(SM) doesn't do, bar maybe some quibbles about caching.
As for doing lots of stuff "straight out of the box", so to speak, Opera certainly wins.
I'm not knocking Opera much, except that I have to stick to open source (I'm becoming a bit of a pedant about that - given a choice, I'll go for the open source, because I can change/correct/improve it.)

you know...i'm all about smashing the fascist corporate police state or whatever...but why is "it's microsoft" an answer for why not? i'm sure the OP wants empirical answers and not politics.
the funny thing is everyone talks about how windows and IE aren't secure...but if there wasn't all the hate directed at microsoft, there probably wouldn't be as many security issues because they wouldn't be the only target of malicious software attacks.
why not hate on apple instead? i mean their approach to computers is almost entirely "buy our computers, you can be entirely computer illiterate and still snub your nose at people". they sell their product saying that it's for idiots. they encourage people to not question what goes on with their computers....those are the people that should be targets of internet worms and viruses.
...but then again, the majority use windows so i guess they wanna get more bang for their buck......though just once i'd love to see a devastating worm tear through apples to where it makes headlines like windows viruses have.
sorry, i'm just tired of hearing the same garbage over and over again....you want to improve microsoft and have a problem with their software? get a job programming for them and close the holes. considering that we are in what's mostly a free market, i'm sure microsoft would love to have such willing and eager programmers who want to make a quality product (but then again, time restraints always hurt final products...but that's the business world, not programming). yeah, i get it....microsoft is on almost every computer sold and their software tries to take over your computer...but guess what? every other piece of software does too...ever heard of a little underground never heard of program called itunes? yeah...it takes over your damned computer. but you can turn that off and you can mostly remove the programs or install alternate programs to use (though they don't have the workspace cube...which i just love).
anyways, again, sorry.......ranting a little bit more than i expected to on that remark. i just can't stand the elitism sometimes and i've heard it too much over the years.
on the original topic....get firefox, internet explorer is a joke and you'll have a much better time with firefox. and...you didn't hear this from me, but check out pornzilla for some cool tools.
Firfox makes me druel like a silly little boy. I sure love Firefox yes I do.
Probably, there is something better out there. Between IE and Firefox though.. Firefox all the way.
I love the tab option.
Also, firefox gives you MUCH less spyware. Gotten so much spyware and viruses from IE.
Apple is good and ridiculesly expencive though. However, I remember when they were a damn horrid company. I agree with you on how they promote, the point is though as marketer's they know their business. Yes, they're snooby but in being snooby they have assured the population that their products and electronics will make them intently fantastic.

saying apple is good is a misnomer.....it functions at what it does but it's about as diverse as a KKK function. of course apple has made steps to change that with introducing the intel chipset and making it to where a user could have an apple that dual boots windows and OSX but in the end, it's still an apple...and it's overpriced for the ability and power. you can build a custom PC with windows on it in a dual boot with linux and that machine will be much safer and much more able to do pretty much any and everything. and it'll cost less and you'll get as much power if not more than a mac.
