Not many. Dells offer the option of pre-installed Linux, and System76 machines come with Ubuntu pre-loaded.

Like, um... other than games?

I dunno... if for some reason you're insistent on using MS software instead of switching to the free alternatives, I suppose.

interesting thread. My first computer was a mac classic I remember when win95 came out the joke was to call it mac 88. Unfortunaltely I have gone with all the other sheep and use a windows based laptop with an intel chip Baaa Baaa Baaa. I did try to use Linux (xandros)but found I really did not have the time to learn how to operate it, also there were some driver issues and trying to network with the kids computers (adults at uni) who were using windows was too hard for me. That was a couple of years ago anyone got any advice on a newbie ish friendly linux platform?

Ubuntu is the most popular newbie distro (actually, the most popular distro period) and most stuff works out of the box, depending on your hardware.

I use it and like it. That said, I was coming off of a Mac and not Windows. Installation was (relatively) painless, aside from some temporary issues with the wireless connection, but that was mainly because Apple put a weird wifi chip in my laptop. And yes, it installs as a dual boot quite nicely- that's how my system is currently set up. As far as actual installation, the easiest way would be to boot the livecd (which can be downloaded from their site and burned to a disc) and then, from within that environment, re-size your partitions to make room for Ubuntu and then select "Install" and "Guided- use largest free space."

EDIT: Oh, and make sure you run a back-up before trying this.

The standard cd burner apps like nero dont do the job right. Try this link

http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm

Its less technical too.

Os x. As i've used it since 10.1 (10.5 now) And can usually figure out how to get it to do what i want.

Linux. (Various distros) I find it runs fast on old hardware. I can put it on virtually anything and i can configure little things on it that i can't change on mac.

I've never really used windows for any length of time so i can't really comment on it.

You can right-click on a Mac. I just use the touchpad on my laptop, and in OSX a two-fingered tap registers a a right click. The default in Ubuntu is for a tap on the bottom-right corner of the touchpad to register as a right click. I haven't actually used the mouse clicker button in a long, long time.

Macs have had two+ button mice for 15 years. Why does this myth perpetuate?

Windows I use because it's standard
Macs I don't use that much
Linux I use when I want to host an online game

Remember when MS DOS ruled desktop computers? Remember when we could turn off our computers by the button and not worry about screwing up our computers? Good times back then.
