I no longer use Windows 7. I inadvertently sabotaged it while setting up a partition for Debian, and those jerks at Hewlett Packard don't supply Windows install discs with their PCs like everyone else, so I would have to pay to reinstall it (either buying an install disc or paying a techie to reinstall). Currently I have the PC booted into Knoppix from a DVD, and I'm trying (so far unsuccessfully) to create a bootable install disc for Debian.

If you have only deleted the HP_TOOLS partition and not the others, you may be able to get Windows to boot by settings the SYSTEM partition as active.

OTOH, is there any message you get when booting the Debian disc? Did you download the right disc?

I have downloaded the ISO file for a Debian installer and tried to write it to a USB drive. I used the AMD64 version, since I have an AMD processor.

Why don't you just burn it to a disc? Sometimes booting from USB can be picky.

I would have to get an external CD-ROM drive because the internal drive is being used for the live CD that I'm booting this computer off of.

Windows 7 has been my main OS since February. Great software on it. I also have Ubuntu 10.04 installed but when I use Ubuntu my computer with 3 GB of RAM always runs like it only has a couple hundred MB of RAM. I've been trying out fast and lightweight Linux distros, couldn't get Arch to install (always got errors when I tried installing packages, it often froze when I tried setting it up). Tried antiX last night and liked it a lot, it was very fast. It'll probably be my main Linux OS.

I'm going to try exploring some more alternative OSs. Since I've successfully installed Debian Linux, I've realized how easy it is to install an operating system, so I feel more encouraged to try out some other stuff. I'm thinking of FreeBSD and Haiku, maybe MenuetOS too, and probably some other Linux distros as well.

Been using Ubuntu for the past month now. Frickin' lovin' it so I recommend it to anyone who uses their PC primarily for the internet. It used to be a really old 1GB RAM computer running XP, which we considered tossing it out as it struggled to run firefox. Then Ubuntu came along now it's almost as fast as my other 4GB PC, much prettier too.
