Hm, all right then. I'll just stick with Ubuntu for now if there aren't any major differences. My neighbor is insisting I should use Arch, but I don't have that much spare time.

I looked at arch just now. Did he saw why he thinks you should use it? It seems like you'd have the annoyance of daily updates. It seems to be focused on a minimal install.

Frankly, You are out there expanding your horizons, so going that way makes little sense.

There is nothing in Debian that you shouldn't be able to use. You can just add their repositories to your software sources.

Yeah, I think he dual booted. He just got his comp this week, and nothing was working properly, at one point the OS wouldn't even load, it kept getting slower, etc. He actually had to defrag it today. :P But Ubuntu seems to be working out of the box for him, though there's no wifi in his dorm so no telling if that works yet.

Does he have LAN at least?(I actually prefer that)

And my roomie tried to borrow my printer (using USB connector) and though his XP laptop auto-detected the printer, it wasn't able to figure out how to get the drivers. Ubuntu? Didn't even have to go through any configuration stuff to tell it to get the drivers. Plug in the USB cable and print, simple as that.

What is this when Linux is more user-friendly than Windows? Watch out Microsoft!

Must be a new model printer.

Part of the reason that windows gets bigger each generation is that they include more base drivers. Vista, for example, is much better at autodetection. So people griping about that isnt always justified.

On the other hand, the microsoft repository for drivers tends to lag behind by months, so immediately after you get autodetected, you should always head to the manufacturers web site. If I know the details of the hardware I get the drivers in advance from them.

The reason the 'nixes are smaller but support a great range of hardware is that the repositories and dependencies eliminate a lot of resource duplication.
