Hi! Peter from Scotland,

Now that I am out of my weekend funk,
I can properly respond to most questions,
and observations.

I like your variety of Macintoshes.
I started with a SE from 1987, I paid
$50 for it in 1995.

I later evolved into a IIci@25mhz(3 of them)
and later the IIsi@20mhz(1 of them) and
would best summarize my Desktops.

I later in 1997 to 2005 have the following:

Powerbook 145B@25mhz
Powerbook 180c@33mhz
Powerbook Duo 2300c(3 of them)
Powerbook Duo 210-280c(mixed number
and hated them)
Powerbook 5300, 5300cs(and hated
them)
Powerbook of earlier choice 1400's
in the CS-C variety@117-166mhz
(5 of them and still respect them,
though their video sucked)
Powerbook 3400c(1 of them too big
and heavy)
Powerbook G3 Wallstreets(I have
the upmost respect for these since
they were the best ones next to
the 1400) and I owned 5 of them.

I am later getting a Lombard and
Pismo for the DVD option, and
keeping the PBG3 form factor
is my best option. My respect
for the Wallstreet has inspired
me to continue this PBG3 form
factor.

Sincerely,
Ghosthunter

Hi, Ghosthunter from the US.

That's quite a collection you've got there. I grew up with macs; my mum worked with IT solutions for disabled pupils in schools (though she's had many positions, they've mostly been in that field for the past 10-15 years), so I always had the cast-aways from school (thus the BBC B).

The first mac I had was a classic, but it was more my mum's work machine and was of limited appeal. I had a few games for it, but nothing special. Later, I got an early performa to myself (470 maybe? Can't really remember), which is when I really started using macs a lot, and bought Doom II, Marathon and FA-18 hornet for it. After a while, this was replaced by a later PowerPC performa (50xx something or other I think), which was the last desktop mac I had.

Sadly, I no longer have any mac desktops. When I had them, I hadn't yet learned how to maintain the hardware aspect of them, so when something minor went, like the mobo battery or CD drive, I was no longer able to use the system. I didn't have internet access, so there was nobody really to ask and I was just a kid, so alas, I've only got laptops now. Laptops are pretty good though; I'm typing this from bed with my G4 iBook, but they don't have the same feel to them as a good old desktop system, even with a keyboard and moused plugged in.

Oh, and in case you're wondering how a G4 iBook can be considered 'ex-service', my mum's work, being local council, has a silly rule about any system older than 2 years being considered 'too old' and in need of being replaced. Probably someone, somewhere is getting 'benefits' from the comp companies for that one.

Hi, Peter from Scotland

I don't own that list now. I had 2 Wallstreets
as of recent, and my friend and I sell PB100's,
3400's, 1400's, PBG3's. We tend to stick with
SCSI ports because you can get parts at the
flea for "dimes on the dollar". USB isn't a flea
market thing just yet, except mice and keyboards
for older imacs.

I gave you a rough list that demostrated my
origins in Macintoshes. It is refreshing to
know that there are people outside the
US that use macs. I was under the impression
that PC's were the 99% item used.

Regarding Scotland, I have always wanted
to go there. Tell me about it, from your
point of view. I can only refer to books
here in the US and movies and they tend
to be a bit exagerated??????

Sincerely,
Ghosthunter

Until maybe 7 years ago, the entire school system here used macs, but by the time I left for uni 4 years ago, they'd switched to dell PC's (ack!) running windows (ack!). There were lots of mac enthusiasts in the school system though, and they won't have just dissapeared into the ether, so I suspect macs have a fair chance of returning to schools. Googling on the subject shows that there's defiantely a fair bit of mac activity still in UK education.

I don't really know what the mac penetration is like in the rest of UK society, but I suspect it has a fair chunk of the market.

Exaggerated? No, our willies really are that big :P

It would be hard for them to exaggerate the scenery, at least if you were to travel about 50Km north of Glasgow:

We really do wear kilts, at least for formal occasions:

We have the highest level of gingerness in the world:

Anything else you'd like confirmed?

I have a POS Compaq laptop that I bought at a pawnshop two years ago for a couple of hundred bucks. --The owner was selling it cheap due to the fact that he couldn't figure out how to get past the login PWL. :?
--It took me about ten seconds to get root, and I had never run XP before. --So much for windows security. :? After Ithe KaZaa Crap, two of the three (!?) DVD players, and all of the Compaq crap it actually wasn't that bad, and was preloaded with Photoshop 6.

I have since reformatted the HDD and am running XP Pro on the Original 20gig HDD, and Linux on another 100gig HDD that I swap out. The specs on the comp are ComboDrive, 1Ghz Athlon, with 256 memory, and a crappy S3 vid chip that's tied with 16megs of main memory instead of dedicated vram, and really short battery life, however, it get's some stuff done, and that's more or less what counts.

I have a completely custom-built ( and tweaked ) PowerMac G4:

G4 "Mystic" ( Gigabit Ethernet ) logic board, clocked to 133mhz ( upclocked from 100 )
933mhz G4 processor ( daughtercard taken from a Quicksilver ), upclocked from 867mhz and soon to see 1Ghz, once I find a suitable heatsink
GeForce4ti 4600 graphics card, with 128mb DDR VRAM and the GPU upclocked to 325mhz
1Gb PC133 SDRAM
Sonnet Tango 3 port FireWire, 2 port USB PCI card ( so I now have a total of 4 USB and 5 Firewire ports )
Sonnet Tempo 2 port ATA133 PCI card
60Gb Western Digital hard drive ( I really need a bigger hard drive )
And a nice 19 inch Viewsonic VX900 LCD display with a 600:1 contrast ratio :D

I use The Gimp on OS X quite a bit on this workhorse, for illustrative duties ( tho I am also known to play Zelda: Ocarina of time quite a bit via SixtyForce ).

I also have a clamshell iBook, running at 400mhz ( previously 300 ), which I use as a wireless router/ server for the G4.
I modified the case, to make it transparent/ transparent blue, with a glowing blue apple logo.
It is now able to accept 12.5mm hard drives, and I have it running OS Xv10.3 with a 5400rpm 60Gb drive with a 2mb buffer, as well as 544mb of RAM.

For future upgrades, I'm going to purchase a VGA TV tuner for the Viewsonic display. It's connected to the G4 via DVI, so I would have but only to press a button to switch between my computer desktop and cable TV :D
And I'm thinking about a nice 180mb/sec SCSI card, to take advantage of the 10,000rpm SCSI hard drive I've had doing nothing for a while.

I'm also currently attempting to resurrect and modify an old PowerBook 2400c. Did you know you can solder in a additional 1mb of VRAM and enable 24-bit colour on those?

A nice Pismo would make for a replacement to my Clamshell, as well.

I do a lot of drafting/rendering. I plan to get 3ds max for animation sometime in the future. . .that program eats ram like a NFL player eats beef.
