If your looking for something for this one trip then go get a cheap-O but if your looking to hold onto an MP3 player for a long time go iPod. iPods are quality products, they have proven their worth by their continued popularity, their program stability, and sleek elegant design.

Yet anyone who really knows about technology (asides total Apple nuts - who are buying more on a religious basis) does not have one. *wonders why*
Indeed "most proper computer people" who also, by the way, use Desktop Linux or a Unix distribution of some sort at home, are unlikely to own an iPod! Mac OS X could be considered as being a Unix under the hood, but I am not including it for this one.

With a generic mp3 player how do you plan on managing the music (other than on the player itself)?

Both our players copy off our PCs with their included USB cables. Does someone actually make a player where you can't do that?

From what I can tell, you're over-estimating Apple's "greatness" in this area. We've never had issues downloading songs from independant stores or with the devices themselves.

Actually, if you buy them from iTunes plus or rip them from a CD in the first place you will have a plain old mp3 ..... and you can burn that as many times as you want.

Exactly and additionally the whole iTunes Music Store is going to be DRM-free by the end of this quarter, so you will be able to do this with any song you bought there. (See http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.a ... ed-pricing)

ORLY? Well it's about f**king time! I've been trying to deal with Apple's mindf**ked DRM system ever since I lost my Nano. Plus, did you know that you can't use the Apple-encoded iTunes music files for Windows-based movie/presentation programs, such as WMM and Powerpoint? I've tried it, it just doesn't work. I'm glad Apple has finally decided to roll with universal compatibility. The only thing I ask is that they'd sure as hell better retrograde this to .mp4 and .aac files already in your library. I didn't spend $10 on The World Ends With You Original Soundtrack with DRM just to find out I have to buy it again to get the non-DRM package.

Haven't you ever heard of Tunebite, noob?

No, the hell is that?

Thanks for the opinions. Great response.

I bought the 8 GB Sansa Fuze. If I was capable of getting myself to spend alot of money I probably would have gotten the large IPOD model. But it costs over $280.00, then 8.375% tax on top of that. This was $99.

The only time I use the gadget is when I am travelling. Monday I get to take a trip from NYC to Stone Mountain, GA. Very boring. And my lovely friend who will be driving likes music that I don't like, as well as Mike and the Mad Dog. The voices on those 2 guys are very irritating. Now I can listen to music that I prefer. I actually would prefer to listen to nothing. That's the reason for noise cancelling earphones, but I have to be listening to something for them to work. I think it would be more relaxing just to hear rain, etc., or the sound of my friend's voice. Actually newsradio is pretty good as well.

iPod.

What a waste of money.

Agreed.

I have a Creative Zen Touch (40GB). I really like it although I bought mine second hand and it is a little iffy sometimes (for example you press the next track button and it pauses or you press pause and it goes back to the beginning).

But other than that it's good (but very chunky).

Two important points that I can think of:
- If you're going to be using it to jog with, one with the hard disk is not a good choice as you can easily damage it internally.
- Make sure it has dedicated volume buttons unless you want to go into the menu every time you want to adjust the volume.
