I litteraly HATE this font!! Its the most ugly text creation excisting on earth...

Well I am clear in my mind....just beeing incredible annoyed by this ugly font appearing as default everywhere. In my emailprogram I have set another font as default so I dont have to see it there but....

I cant delete it in "Microsoft works processor".
It doesnt matter what I do there this dreadful text is so stubborn to appear anyway. I have tried to erase it from my computer via the control panel and I have tried to disabled it from the computer but NOTHING WORKS!

When I saw this thread I also saw the chance to get rid of all of Times Roman once and for all.

Please HELP!!

Easy as pie. Find a font you like and name it the same as times new roman. then install it in your windows fonts. It will overwrite the one you hate.

A less destructive method would be to goto Format>Fonts and set up the font you want as the new default. Then goto the character spacing tab and press default and tell them you want to set the new font as default.

xalepax doesnt want to see it at all. Your solution only works for things set to default.

In that case, is there something wrong with fully deleting it? After all, wouldn't the computer just substitute another font if worst came to worst (Probably courier or lucida console I presume)?

Anyway. Computers sometimes do really bad things when they cannot find what they are looking for. I've seen lack of a font freeze up a program.

I have seen programs refuse to start without their fonts...

I quite like "Times New Roman" but I went through a phase of using nothing but aerial.

The nicest looking font, but one the hardest to read is Marriage, while jack the ripper is also hard to read but might be ideal for letters of complaint to the utility companies. I would love to know if this font has a subliminal effect or not.

Though MS Sans Serif more or less models Helvetica, I have found that in programs like WordPad and MS Word I can type it into the font box and actually get an even better model of it. Furthermore, I have found that typeing "Small Fonts,"Tms Rmn," "MS Serif," and "Helv" will get other results. I know at one point there were alternate names, such as in pre-Windows 3.1 versions of windows (I believe.) Does this have something to do with it? MS Serif and Tms Rmn seem to be the same font, and they seem, obviously, to be somehow related to Times [New] Roman. Does anyone have any information on what exactly is going on? I also know that there are many hidden files in the \Windows\Fonts directory. Thank you very much.

I should note that this kind of thought is completely the result of Autism Spectrum thinking, but I know I should be safe here with those sorts of obsessions.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes

Fascinating...interestingly, when I try out Helv, it pixelates what otherwise wouldn't be like that. Say, a 72 point figure. So if my computer is using Helvetica like that, its actually using Arial? That explains why Helv was giving me a better emulation of real Helvetica - MS Sans Serif is closer. At least in my approximation. What is funny is that we have a program at school that can use Helvetica...I wonder if it is really using Arial for this since it displays on my computer. Would checking out the shape of the R tell me that? What is MS Serif for though? I remember seeing its name mentioned in a font readability test, as well as 'Small Fonts' which also seems to work, but is not listed in this registry key. Is it safe to create my own font subs by the way? I really hope I am not annoying anyone! Thanks so much!

MS Serif, MS Sans Serif, Small Fonts are all bitmap fonts. In Explorer, they have an icon with a capital A on a paper (or whatever). Since Helv is substituted by MS Sans Serif, that's why it pixelates at non-native size. btw you may also see that bitmap fonts aren't anti-aliased.

Interestingly, the fonts folder seems to have an Open Type version of MS Sans Serif as well.
