You need to edit your x windows config file. KDE has nothing to do with X resolution.

Is this normal for a fresh install?
"Used memory: 829.1MB of 884.2MB 93.8%"
(no swap used yet)
What the hell is hogging it all, and where's the last 139.8MB (I have 1Gb of ram installed)? Is it some sort of pre-loading debian does when there's free ram laying around? I've checked the process listing, and it only shows about 250MB total being used up. Also, am I really old fashioned in thinking that an OS should fit just fine into 50MB of ram or less? What's 'X' doing that it needs 148.3MB for?
Oh, and is mega-byte 'MB' or 'Mb'? Which one's mega-bit?

Thanks

<Back from Mandrake>
<Didn't find an x windows anything>
Hmmm... now it's down to 210.4 of 884.2 MB. Guess there must have been junk left over from the install or gremlins. Faeries even...
Here's 'ps avx' anyway:

I don't seem to have /dev/hdX:
i meant X to be a variable. do you have hda, hdb, etc or sd0, sd1 or hd0

ps v usually implies -m (it must be different on debian). can you do "ps axm" ? By the way, none of your processes seem to be hogging memory. That's probably because you have so much memory. how much memory does linux think you have?

Well, in /dev, I have a whole bunch of icons with names of "hda, hdb" and "sd0, sd1", as well as other ones like 'hdb12', 'hdc14', 'xdb3', 'sdf10' and so on, all with 'naked HD' icons with little red crosses, and which give error messages like "Couldn't display "/dev/sdf10"." when double-clicked on. Some of them don't have the red crosses, but they still give the same message.

Debian's telling my I have 884.2MB in the system monitor. Actual RAM is 1024MB. I think mandrake gives me about 884MB too. Windows 98SE recognises the full 1024MB.
Here's 'ps axm' for you:

that is still listing stuff in the wrong order. Oh well. I think your ram should all be recognized by something in the kernel.

Yup, it detected them ok. I've got debian up and running now. It's recognised my network and I've got sound, but I can't find my other partitions and HD's anywhere. Any idea where they might be?
You need to edit your fstab file Peter - I'm doing the same. Instructions/help here:
http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/fstab.html (Google rocks. heh heh)

Ach, who am I kidding. It's hard to feel lazy when you started cycling at 8.30am and didn't arrive at your workshop on search engine optimisation until 10.00am.

Thanks for the link. I'll look into it when I get home.

No problem - oh btw you need to create the mount points you refer to in fstab as real directories (e.g home/mandrake), then add the hard disks to your mnt/ directory for them to work - would have said before but I just worked it out myself lol ![]()
