Switching? I've been on the beta/alpha versions for a while now. Only squares wait for the stable release. 15%  15%  [ 4 ]
Nah, an older version is still working fine for me and I don't want to mess it up. 15%  15%  [ 4 ]

click system, administration, and restricted drivers should be in that list, near the top. Its third in mine.

Click that, then find you driver and click the circle beside it. Apply.

Definitely less crufty; I can fix the repos and restore some things, but I'm not as familiar with restricted drivers and how to re-enable them under the upgraded version. Even though I'm more knowledgeable about Ubuntu Linux than most of my peers and co-workers, sadly I'm at a loss at times when it comes to various tasks such as this.

Well, some settings change from release to release, so if you edited any config files manually they might get reset, which could screw stuff up in some ways. I think either my trackpad settings or my keyboard layout got changed when I upgraded. Anyways, I just have crappy integrated graphics, but I know Ubuntu has been incorporating more and more proprietary drivers. I'd be surprised if an ATI card worked last release but won't work this release.

Huh. You're probably right. I may just take the leap into 9.04 tonight - maybe they disable it to upgrade or something.

Fuzzy, are you running the latest release as well?

I think Fuzzy's been running 9.04 since it was in alpha.

My netbook's running 9.04, but then again, it doesn't have a dedicated graphics card (go soldered motherboard components!) to worry about. So far it runs pretty good.

Linux is so awesome.

Follow-up: Finally upgraded on the big Acer 5100; unfortunately the ATi card threw a fit and scrambled the screen before I could even log in. Found a workaround by this, in case anyone else has the same problem:

sudo apt-get remove xorg-driver-fglrx

I also had problems with the screen scrambling during session; I'm not sure exactly how I solved this, but I ran a reconfig and so far everything's worked out fine:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg --frontend=gnome

Boot time is good, as well as shutdown; no problems with wireless card. Hopefully these will be the last of my problems with Jaunty 9.04.
