Recomend me a linux friendly personal media player?

I use Rythembox for my audio and the very uniquely named 'movie player' for video. They are the defaults for Ubuntu and once they download a few codecs, they work perfectly. Rythembox even plays files that WMP doesn't know what to do with.

Use Banshee Music Player for audio, and Movie player for videos. Banshee is compatible with iPods too.

Haha, Sorry. I am looking at buying a device.

Google was equally mislead. My fault.

I've ruled out zune. I dont want an ipod.

well, if it supports MTP (media transfer protocol) it will likely make a fantastic linux friendly player. something to beware of with rockbox is to date no media players will automatically update it's database when transferring files to it, rockbox will have to update it's DB in order for you to browse by id3 tag info.

If you want a good rockbox compatible player, I used to own an H320 from iriver and it was pretty excellent however they arent manufactured anymore. Most of what iriver makes it MTP compatible though.

The Sansa players are pretty good (and support MTP), am I too late?

Not at all. Sansa... I have heard that said before too. So that is +2 score for sansa.
