It's almost as though Apple is trying to perpetuate the stereotype of its userbase as incompetent buffoons. I mean, half her paper gone? Why had she not saved anything? I compulsively hit control-s repeatedly to save my files, even though I know my lovely journaled filesystem won't lose my data anyways.

Hope she enjoys her Apple - I'm sure she has very little money left for pot.

y'know, when I was last working on a long letter or something in word, we had a power outage or something happened where the computer got shut off before I could save it. When the computer got turned back on, lo and behold, my work was all there.

I'm Mike and I'm a PC. Image

Yup, that's how it's supposed to work. It's called journaling, and pretty much every modern operating system except BSD uses it (I think they have some alternate system to avoid data loss). If you're running Windows and you lose data in a crash, it's usually because of someone being dumb enough to use FAT instead of NTFS.

excuse me? "Dumb enough"? I thought the FAT system you had to use if your hard disk was under a certain size.

FAT is outdated. It's a hangover from the DOS days.

No, you cannot use FAT16 if your disk is OVER a certain size. Fat32 will work for modern sized disks though.

But it is recommended that you use NTFS with windows xp, vista, and windows seven, as NTFS features journalling which protects against data loss. Fat32 does not do this.
