You need to enter the hostname, for example "ftp.example.com" and then authorize yourself. As a general rule, you use "guest" and your email for the password.
If you just need to download from ftp, why don't you just type the link into your browser?

A lot of the linux file browsers such as Ubuntu's nautilus can act as rudimentary FTP applications. open /home and in the entry at the top, type in the ftp url.

If you can put more info it'll be easier for people to help you figure out what you want to do, but what sqoouf said will help you,
maybe.

Hmm...I thought you could logon as 'anonymous', but I could be wrong...;) FTP I never really used for anything but uploading web pages. Heck, I've used telnet since I've last used FTP...;)

Username: anonymous
Password: <your email address>

That always was the standard, for 99% of FTP servers that accepted public access.

How many will also accept "guest" as a username, these days, I don't know.
